Re: Oxford City Race
Thankyou to everyone involved in staging the Oxford Race, particularly as none of you got a run! Next year ask for help. I would love a copy of the photo someone took of me running into the glass door!

Re: Oxford City Race
I notice looking at the splits, that 130-138 (mens vets) may have had similar problems . You know who you are
Yes - we certainly do and we realised that at the time.
There was this student conveniently opening the gate and holding it for the other two - so I just followed - that's why I got the fastest split - I was the one hanging on the back as we approached.
As I punched I thought we might be given away by an impossibly fast split - and it was pretty obvious - just the 3 of us on course 2.
If I'd won or it was a Championship I ought to be DQ'd. I think I'll settle for being laughed at

Yes really enjoyed it - a lot more straight forward than last year - and because I've stuffed myself up into a black edged corner so many times before I seem to have developed a nasty dithering habit - more forward planning is required - i think some kind of city race coaching sessions are called for.

As I've no idea who you are Loofa I can say this with no predjudice. That you own up to cheating, accidentally or not is great. However I cannot understand why you think your result should stand. Firstly from a personal point of view it always suprisies me how pple who fail to complete a course feel satisfied by their "result" (This often happens in fell racing where if runners see that a summit is not marshalled they simply don't go there!) Secondly the fact that you don't win is irrelevant - what about the competitive peope that you "beat" by your illegal advantage.
At best, on the basis that it was an accidental discretion, I feel that a hefty time penalty should be added to your time.

Can I just ask what actually happened here, as I had to rush off straight after my run I don't know what was done about this, was the gate opened in the end?

I think it must have been, I didn't come across one. Was it as you entered or exited the college?
Will? We've got proper fire now!

Re: Oxford City Race
It was opened at about 12.15pm. Again, sorry to all those affected.
Thanks for the generally positive feedback. We tried to strike a balance between getting people into colleges, and not going over the same old ground as last year; I'd like to think we didn't do a bad job, though I appreciate that there were rather fewer "dreaming spires" that in 2007, and I apologise to anyone who was disappointed. Perhaps we'll be able to redress the balance in 2008...
It's interesting to hear people' s opinions on the map paper - that was probably the one issue that caused the most debate amongst the organising team in that last couple of weeks . I personally find the stiffness quite annoying, but we were concerned about the perennial problem of loss of detail on the creases, and of the waterproof papers I've seen this is by far the one where the ink stays the best, particularly in the wet.
I'm surprised nobody's commented yet on the special symbol for "raised paved area" - did it work okay? Anyone on courses 3/4 actaully go over the top between 134 and 112?

Two things, both on the same leg. One gate into St Anne's wasn't open for early starters.
The other was an unmarked gate providing a much faster route, and often opened by "helpful" students.
On courses 2-4 it was straightforwardly illegal - people went through a solid black wall. On course 1 it was more equivocal:
the overprinted number has a thin white border, this cut the solid black line leaving an apparent break
at the place where the (unmapped) gate was. I tried to go that way, but in the absence of helpful students
couldn't get through , but nobody on course 1 who went through could be faulted.
If it really mattered (I don't think it does), that leg should have been taken out of the results, as it is clearly unfair.
I should quickly add that as a competitive race it was outstanding. The next day's Southern Champs, although a fine
example of traditional regional event on a delightful area, came nowhere close to the capturing the excitement, the
showcasing for the sport and the competitive feeling of OUOC's event.

PS. Top tip: the new map paper is slippery. Don't drop it, if you do don't drop it from a raised platform, but if you do remember to punch first I never thought I'd lose time because of windblow in a city race

I only spotted the route over the top from 3-4 on course 1 after the race unfortunately.
Looking at it afterwards, this way of mapping raised areas appears superior to what I remember was used in the Grand Bazaar (I say what I can remember as we weren't allowed to keep our maps unfortunately - some sort of security issues with the Police) where it wasn't particularly obvious what was up and what wasn't, the only clue you would have is that the controls on upper levels were marked in green rather than purple and knowing that there must be a set of steps somewhere that might get you up to it!

RouteGadget is now up - let me know if it doesn't seem to be working for you, as I've been having a couple of problems getting to grips with it...

It doesn't look usable yet. The courses appear to be offset from the map.

So they do. Which is perturbing, as it was working when I nipped out for lunch twenty minutes ago.
I'll try to work out what's going on...
