Trivia quiz question: have a husband and wive ever both been ranked number one at the same time before?
Serious question: how come the ranking list is so [nope]?

Yes, as the old INT website will tell you, Mr and Mrs Ackland were ranked number one under the old "Alphabetical" system. And for the same reason we were joint top of the new lists after zero events.
Serious question: how come the ranking list is so [nope]?
Because it rewards participation and well as performance. Actually, its not so bad in the middle, but like any statistical system it has problems at the extremes.
Obviously the UK Cup system is more accurate (it ranks me equal with Jamie...)

I think it would certainly give a fairer reflection if it ranked people with their mean scores, as then it would incorporate their not-so-good runs as well as their better ones - it seems you can get a better ranking the more events you participate in at the moment!

sometimes it's good as it allows you to compare points from different races and terrains to see how your performance varies, but that's just based on the points you've gained, not the position in the rankings....

For us also-rans the rankings provide a reasonable target for improvement - e.g. get into the top 100.
I think the opposite to distracted. Top 6 scores are good and I would say calcing the mean to create the scores should only include the top 6 also. If I normally score (say) 900 and I'm coming back from illness/injury and I know I'm only going to score 700 then I might be tempted to deliberately mis-punch so it doesn't affect my score. That's silly!

Yes, it does matter when they start using silly ranking systems to say you cant enter the races. (JK elites, BEOC, FCC final, home international teams, freebies to Lithuania etc.)

So if nobody in "power" has any faith in the rankings why doesn't somebody in "power" suggest fixing/scrapping them?
Don't get me wrong I'm not having a whinge - people have to put a lot of effort to produce these rankings and it seems their time is being wasted?

You misquote me - I said "silly ranking systems", plural. Elite race selection uses the system which ranks me equal with Jamie.
Tell me which freebie to Lithuania???
I believe that (as well as free entry, reception at the Embassy etc...) the team got use of free guidance from a Lithuanian resident and professional tour operator who was even an English speaker (albeit with a heavy accent).

I think that they are preprared by a chappie who's really into statistics, as a favour to us all, rather than being a BOF thing. But as they say, "there's lies, damn lies, and statistics"

The rankings lists are produced solely in response to a demand from BOF members. I was sat on the last rankings working party (partly because I was the representative sceptic) which very seriously considered scrapping the whole scheme, but there was a very strong demand for it. Equally, the format (including all badge events, separate short class rankings etc.) was based very much on member's views.
I still think it's a pity that it was called the ranking scheme, as I don't think it does that, and it has since caused confusion with people thinking that it has an influence on selections, but it does appear to provide an incentive for quite a few people.
As for somebody in "power" suggesting they are fixed or scrapped, I suspect there's enough flak flying around already
