Taster Event at Wandlebury Country Park, Cambridge, 10.03.07
Just back from a very successful taster event, run by 3 rangers at Wandlebury Country Park, 2 of whom are WAOC members. 75 people attended, 41 adults and 34 children (or similar numbers - for exact figures, please see organiser's report on WAOC website, when it's written). Publicity - people heard about the event from a variety of sources, including Cambridge Preservation Society events leaflets, items in local free papers, listing on WAOC event (explaining it wasn's a WAOC event, but was in WAOC area - at least one newly joined family came because of this). After doing as many of few training options as they liked, from map walking, cone maps, star exercises and a short orange course, everyone went away apparently happy and many asked about future possibilities and were given details about WAOC SMILE events. Obviously it will be a while before we know if the event leads to more attendances at events (WAOC or futher afield - one mother from Leicester came with a son in a boarding school in Cambridge) or memberships, but at leats people had the chance to try proper orienteering with extra introductory support.
