Oxford City Race 2007

It's a little early for some blatent self-promotion, but I know how you all love to plan your lives well in advance...

After several weeks of harassing Oxford City Council for permissions, OUOC are proud to announce the second (annual!) Oxford City Race will take place on Saturday 10th November 2007, this year featuring previously unmapped parts of the city and (with any luck) a different set of colleges to run through.

Possible combos are with the Southern Night Champs on the Saturday night, and on the Sunday with the Southern Champs/NWO Regional in West Woods (near Marlborough) - or, for those who are feeling particularly hardcore, with the Venice Street Race

The 2006 event in Oxford was superb indeed, but the date chosen for 2007 does really set me a problem .... Oxford or Venice .... Venice 2006 was awesome .... the sun shone, the sky was blue, the flight was cheap ..........and I nearly won M60 ( lost it by 14 seconds ... )
So where to go ... really want to do both but ...

Ian - I'm sorry that the 10th isn't convenient for you, but we were never going to be able to keep everybody happy. We didn't want to have it too near the start of term - and thus scare all our freshers away by forcing them to play marshall in their first couple of weeks here - whilst 3rd Nov and 24th Nov were out as university Degree Days, which seriously reduce our chances of getting permission to run through any colleges (the 3rd is also the first day of the November Classic). That just left 10th Nov (Southern Nights), 17th Nov (Veteran Home International, British Schools Champs, CUOC Sprint-O) and 1st Dec (after the end of term, when most of the club will have gone home). We picked the day that we thought would suit the most people, and I apologise to anybody who's going to miss out.

Though it's not up on their website yet, I have it on good authority that Venice is on Sun 11th Nov. I'm also a bit disappointed about this - I wanted to go this year - but they got back to us too late (after the point at which we'd had to start applying for permissions). Again, my apologies to anybody affected.

is the Southern Nights really that important? I'm a dedicated night orienteer, and even travelled all the way over to the Southern Nights last year, but personally I wouldn't even think about saving myself for a regional night champs, when there's such an interesting event during the day. In fact the combination of both together actually sounds rather appealing to me.

Given what we were told about how the date was selected, this strikes me as an entrant for fatuous comment of the year, which is perhaps why there is the LOL? I do hope Gross was trying to be funny, given the sensible efforts of the organisers.

Besides which, there don't seem to be any major events in Estonia that weekend...
