i know i wasn't there, but the JK middle distance race looked a bit long to me (with regard to the winning time)... isn't a middle distance race meant to be around 30 minutes winning time?
what do people think? it seems that planning middle distance races too long happens a lot in the UK.

and about scraping the upper limits of the guidlines, M16A winning times according to them should be 45-55mins. day1 was won in 45, and day 2 29 so this either is because the fastest were so good, or the courses were underplanned (or both)

Was day 1 too long?
Yes, of course it was. If you enter a race with a 25-35 minute winning time you should get a 25-35 minute winning time. The course was too long, simple as that.
Probably because the planner didn't know "middle distance" is the new name for "short distance".
As it happens, I'd prefer a longer course on day 1, 40+90 winning times would be fine. But that's a different issue.

Actually middle distances are now meant to be 35 minute winning times, so although it was too long, it wasn't 50% too long.
Anyway I thought it was top notch planning, and a quality weekend. Nice one to all involved.

Can't really comment as I wasn't there, but one thing confuses me.....
A few weeks ago in the "What's wrong with British Orienteering?" thread, everyone seemed to be saying that we weren't promoting the sport as being tough enough....and now you seem to be whinging that the courses were too long

I think the complaint (a few weeks ago) was the the sport is not "sold" as a tough sport. not that its not tough in the first place!

No. The issue is that the M21E day 1 course was advertised as one thing, and turned out to be another. I dont think anyone would have complained if they knew beforehand it was a 40minute race.
You wouldn't be happy a 10k, only to find half way round it was actually 10 miles would you? Even if you were quite capable of running 10 miles.

okay, okay...so all this middle classic sprint elite distance stufff is wasted on me, but yeah I do get annoyed when I find the Brown course is 10.5km and equally when I've driven for nearly two hours and its only 7.5km .
(no they're not too long, it's just that there is no climbing involved....except out of a really deep bomb crater)
