i think the sport is changing as some of you have said, but i think in most peoples minds the classic winner is the ultimate champion. i disagree though, who are the 2 best orienteers male orienteers of recent times? i reckon most people would say Rostrup and Ikonen, and primarily these 2 are middle distance specialists (yes i know that rostrup won the classic 2001 but i bet you he would have swapped that for another gold in the short) Also last year Theirrys run was probably the best run at a world champs ever once again in the middle. As for the sprint, this is probably the hardest race to win, ie there are probably 12 guys that could win, for the short and classic its more like 6. In a race like the VM03 middle, the best technical orienteers are always gonna be up the top, and the classic is gonna be the toughest most well trained guy. So the answer to the question for me, is the middle 1st, cos you have to be bloody good orienteer but also quick, the sprint 2nd for trying to run at 3mins kms and orienteer at the same time, and the fact the competition is so fierce, and the classic 3rd (i put the classic 3rd because if you are the fittest orienteer on the day, you got the best chance of winning, the classic is by far the easiest race to win if you are already one of the top guys!!!!

To help young Scotia on his way to Gold in the Classic in 2007 in Ukraine [well maybe that's just a little ambitious ] Scotland have provisionally arranged an International Match v Ukraine over the weekend May 7 & 8 2005... or roundabout then anyway... depends the exact dates of BJOC [or eve WC] which I've not checked yet!
Go orienteering in Lithuania......... best in the world:)

Ukraine eh ? mmmmmmmm... sweaty
oh and police escorts - cool !
Anyhow
not stating a preference yet but,
I don't think there is any difference between Long and middle, they are just different lengths, if you can win one you can win the other.
Sprint is different, there is a different skill set partly to do with the maps partly to do with the nature of the venues ( I couldn't bring myself to say terrain !).
All this applies of course unless your name is Luder
in which case there is no difference
and you don't have to choose
My preference ....
Relay !
standing up under that kind of pressure is the ultimate test.

To be a better orienteer you have to be better at both running and navigating surely? Even though I'm a reasonable navigator and not a reasonable runner then I'd still have to say classic is the most prestigious. Ultimate test of both running and nav.
Who said we don't do long-o anymore - you obviously didn't see M21L at Simonside?
