Arto Rautiainen was an orienteering legend who died suddenly aged only 36 years in 2004. He was married with two very young kids.
Arto was a great friend and former flatmate of mine here in Göteborg and without doubt one of the nicest and most positive people I've ever met.
As a fitting tribute to Arto it's been announced today that the 'Champs Memorial' orienteering race will take place in Göteborg on the 1st May. (The Champ was Arto's nickname)
The race will be for the 25 best orienteers in the world (+ a few wild cards)and will take place 2 days after tio-mila.
The winner of the mens and womens race will each receive £4500, which I think is the biggest prize money ever in a single orienteering race. The race will take place in central Gothenburg city in an area of technical forest by the river and be shown live on TV. There will be a public race after the elite competition.
Anybody planning on coming out for tiomila or running JWOC in Gothenburg 2008 should seriously consider staying out for this race. Should be amazing. Also the 30th April is a massive party night in Gothenburg to celebrate the Spring.
