I'm going to do a presentation in a couple of weeks on sports medicine and the way that this field conducts research.
You see medicine is very evidence based whereas i suspect that research into training, streching etc... is more coming from an asumed knowledege based based on years of experience.
Anyway shall not bore you some more but i want some links to some sports medicine sites that may help me.
Would love to look at some orienteering ones. If availible.

have you already been to http://bjsm.bmjjournals.com? You can view to abstract level without subscribing.
April 2004 includes "the effect of pre-season dance training on physical indices and back pain in elite cross-country ski-ers; a prospective controlled intervention study" (I am not kidding) from Karolinska hospital Stockholm. There was a good sports injury/physiology team there at least as far back as 1977, and they were working on elite cyclists and swimmers at that time. There's got to be lots out there, but I'm not in touch with that field any more, though I have contacts who are if you have no success

These days research into training/stretching etc isn't just experience based, it's often good proper research - or I presume that's how sportrs physiologists like fat rat get their jobs!
Would suggest that one think that makes scientific resaearch into training for elites difficult is being able to conduct controlled studies with top-line elites.
But in general there is an absolute heap of scientific information on training, and then added to that the great anecdotes of how the best of the best used to train.

lots of articles on Swedish elites and other "O medical" articles listed at http://www.ausport.gov.au/nsic/sju/query.asp?subject=62. Will give you names of researchers in this field, who you could contact
you can also try http://www.nsmi.org.uk/about-us.html (all UK sports) or http://www.ped.gu.se/scijo/scijo.htm for the home pages of what appears to be a now defunct "scientific journal of orienteering".It clearly published between 1985 and 2000, and had Sue Walsh, from University of Wales on its ed. board
nopesporters might also be delighted to hear that orienteering featured at the "Ironman Sports Conference" in the US a couple of years ago

The http://www.nsmi.org.uk link ifititches gave still works, however the NSMI (National Sports Medicine Institute) ceased to exist in April (I used to work there!)
But you may still find their SportDiscus/Smart service of use - links to thousands of journals - try contacting SportDiscus direct (follow the links) from NSMI as there isn't anyone at the NSMI anymore
