I can't imagine for one minute that hairing around a piece of grassy, ornamental parkland and jumping over a bale of straw would appeal to a 'real' gnarly orienteer. One day, when my lottery ticket comes up, I might just organise a series of televised 'proper' terrain races, involving rivers, mud, hedges, ditches, technical descents etc. I guarantee you won't see any Kenyan track fly boys !

Tim sleepless - Yep, Now your talking ! Done it 3 times. Best result 57th in 2002. Get a lot of rugby teams and hairdressing salons entering ! Say no more ! There's no way a gnarly old git of, then 44, should be 57th out of 6500 !!
Highly recommended.
Rocky - Mr. Stevenson hardly had time to get his feet wet ! What sort of gnarly race lasts 13minutes !!
When aye were a lad . . . . .

the tough guy is bollocks. If you've not done it before its an extra 75 quid ontop of the 40 quid entry to get somewhere near the front of the field for the dash to the first lane. Hmm 115 quid -well it's for a good cause. Actually its not and very dodgy, i found some info a couple of years back on the net -someone had done some investigation -the bank account that you send your money to is in the name of the farmer rather than the charity to whom you think you are sending your money. Seems this chap is doing quite well out of it.
While i rekon the tough guy would be alot of fun and i could be in the top few, i'm not going to fork out x quid to give to some dodgy farmer chap.

Having done 5 of the very early Tough Guys (1987 - 91)they started as a hard XC but degenerated into a potentially dangerous assauly course where most people had no relevant skills or training. Then the entry fee went up and up.
As a money making venture I have to admire Billy - an old wet field and some obstacles and you can charge 3000+ people at least £50 for a run.
Would I do another one - NO

What are you on about?! That tough guy race sounds like absolute pish! I don't know who the "tough and gnarly" orienteers are you're thinking of, but even if the world xc champs "appealed" to them, it wouldnt make a blind bit of difference because they wouldnt stand a chance of making the team.
