The reason Mrs H's mag is so good.......
she has tonnes of articles! i don't know whether she bullies people into writing them but in my club i know that if you don't ask, you don't get.
she always writes a controversial editors bit!! shes not afraid to say waht she thinks. for example, in the last issue she totally slated the British champs. she just wrote what everyone was thinking, and somehow that makes it interesting and very, err, readable?
there are always lots of pictures with funny captions.
its all in colour so it looks very pretty and its in that lovely font, comic sans i think its called.
there, sorry Mrs H, your secrets are out!
Nopesport at the AGM - strategies?
Moderators: [nope] cartel, team nopesport
...and there's been stuff aboot nopesport for the past few months, and she doesnt pander to anyone.
but my only gripe (sorry rachel) is the comic sans.
i could write you an essay on why comic sans is linked to the downfall of the printing industry (i wrote one for uni a while back) but i wont cos i have done enough ranting around here lately. i will just say that if you changed to something like helvetica it would your mag the best mag of all time. by far. (and i mean even better than SCORE).
one little thing i noticed too. if you are creating pdf files for the web of ad-hoc (like andy told you how), make sure that the settings for creating them create them at 72dpi for screen reading. otherwise your files will be really slow loading and people wont bother.

Once again, cheers Rachel and Samsonite
I'll have a look at the font - but i'm not promising
I rarely have to ask for articles - often I have too many to fit in
Yes I do say what I think and it's not all bad either and i just love doing the picture captions and call outs but I am under a lot of pressure now from BOF to tone it down - which seems a bit of a cheek as it is not their magazine but Harlequins - most of whom seem to rather like it. Bob roach has written to the HOC chairman expressing his:
"concerns and disappointments with AD HOC" and then went on to lecture me about the importance of "good communications"
A while back I suggested to Robin Field that BOF instigated a prize for the best club mag thinking at last here was something I could win - of course nothing came of it and the possibility of me winning it now seems even more remote, Ha Ha Ha.
So Rachel, i'm really curious - how come you get to see Ad hoc

Yeah, i know someone who hates comic sans too, someone in my year, he's a, what do you call it, 'code monkey?' & he uses, erm, php? which apparently you use, so he said when we were in IT. But i think its nice to read
And Mrs H, I read it at my sister's house....i've got a pic from the jk run in if you want it for ad hoc...could surprise her....

Rachel, i'll pm you my e-mail address as I love to surprise people with pictures.
I've looked at these fonts and they seem a bit "straight" to me - i want something that doesn't take itself too seriously and i am open to suggestions - but it has to have that tongue in cheek quality - Do you like Papyrus?

my lecturers all use ComicSans (for their lecture slides, and that's comp science!), which does get quite annoying. though i think it might be pretty good for what Mrs H. is doing.

papyrus doesn't look too bad - certainly better than comic sans.
whichever font it is should have serifs though (the little bits on the end of characters, think of the Times masthead) - they help the eye follow along the line on the page since they tend to make the baseline (think the line on a page you'd try to align the bottom of your normal letters to if you were writing) a little more continuous.
arial, helvetica, etc. = sans serif = good for headlines, bad for blocks of text
times, roman, courier = serif = good for blocks of text
comic sans = just plain bad

t6hanks Ed for all the info - they taught us a lot of that at Journo school but it was so long ago now that I've forgotten more than I ever knew. I do feel tho' that a sans serif font is easier on the eye in a small publication - and having spent all my working life in times New Roman I suppose I feel about that the way you feel about comic sans - it just feels a bit rebellious to me - I might give Papyrus an outing next week and see if i get any reaction
As for you PeterG what can I say - I see all the figures have serifs - at least I think thats what they are
Steler is a bit of a Victor Meldrew isn't he - likes to poor cold water on all our fun

sans serif should be used in a publication of your size, serifs make the text slightly illegible.
helvetica is the best typeface ever. full stop. they even published a book about it. its that good. and it will make your publication look more like a style mag. which in this case is a good thing.
comic sans is used in homemade publications such as presentations at uni, birthday cards, church newsletters etc. which is why it should never, ever be used.
papyrus cannot be used for body text as small as you want it. it will look horrible.
times new roman is a version of times, the typeface created specifically for The Times. Using this typeface conveys a message of seriousness and academic-ness(?). which is certainly not what your magazine is about.
garamond is nice for headings too.
sorry to be a type bore.
