I'm just comeing back to the sport after a few years break. There are very few events! DVO for instance has no C4 events this side of christmas.
Why is this? I'm based in east mids, so DVO, NOC, SYO, MDOC are the
preferred areas.

Why so few events these days?

FYI DVO have a C4 event on 19th November at Allestree Park (according to my splits from yesterday) Also there's just about a C4 event on in the East Midlands every weekend from now untill christmas, then there are events outside the EMOA region, I think there are more than enough events

looking ahead in the calendar.... lots of areas are embargoed for major events in the SYO/DVO regions...such as national events and other high profile ones etc.
e.g. Hathersage and Burbage Moors on Dec 3rd. etc.
Also landowners in the midlands don't like orienteers on there every few months/years...its all about access usually.

Maybe there are lots of orienteers in your area having a few years break, so less events are being put on
It would make sense that the membership decline might cause an equivalent reduction in the number of events, but I don't get that impression, at least in the SE. Do you have any stats to support your statement?

Most of the areas you list have had events in the last 2 years. Burbage has a national coming up as Matt says (and has had events there even this year - hmm?).
Not sure what's happened to Hagg Side - anyone know?

Agreed - I won't be going. I do sympathise though - the calendar isn't looking great for this autumn at the moment. Twin Peak back at Erwood 21/22 oct - not the best area but it's ok.

I think there maybe are less events before Xmas these days, but still enough. After Xmas though there are often 8 or 9 events on the same day, which can seriously affect attendances at the lesser known areas. Our club have suffered with this quite a bit in recent years, but no doubt no more than anyone else.
I haven't seen an event at Hagg Side for ages, but I know there has been a huge amount of felling there. Also, is it affected by the proposals to dig a huge quarry on the slopes of Whin Hill?

Hagg Side is an MDOC area. I'm fairly sure that we have been prevented from using it because an organisation (possibly the Peak Planning Board but I might be wrong) has effectively barred us from parking anywhere in the upper Derwent Valley for an organised event.
The last two or three events at Hope Woodlands, on the other side of the valley have only been possible by parking on a farm in the valley to the south (edale) and walking people a few k over the top. Hagg side would be a bit far to walk and bussing involves a fairly long trip by road.
I think we have tried to open discussions again several times, but without success so far.

Ah, it was Hope Woodlands that I was thinking of when I said Hagg Farm

Bow Woods 13/05/06 and 29/04/07
Hardwick 16/07/06
Calke 24/09/06
Lindop 11/02/07
plus
5 C5s so far this year and another to come, 1 Street O, a long Run and the Club Champs.
6 Summer league events
We had to cancel a couple of events because we were unable to get access - an increasing problem - and some are becoming almost unusable because of felling or excess brambles. However, I reckon we've put on 25 events this year - nearly one a fornight. And if every other Club in the EMOA did the same (which some do) we'd have lots of clashes/choices (which we sometimes do).
How do I know? I'm on the DVO Fixtures Committee - or I could have found out by looking at the DVO website: http://www.dvo.org.uk
I just wish I had time to go to all the events in the East Midlands and nearby!
