Thought it was good Eddie brought up the idea of orienteering being part of the Commonwealth Games, sounds like he got the knock-back but why not a Commonwealth Championships anyway like Eddie says - could bring good publicity to orienteering in the UK.
Remember we used to discuss this at JWOC every year, perhaps a Commonwealth Champs for juniors the week before JWOC. Would be good pre-jwoc preperation. Give some good international experience to other juniors from our home nations too......

cheers didsco. its an avenue worth looking into. i'm getting a lot of chat from big cheeses in sport these days. i might even try and give seb some banter next wednesday in cardiff to see if a 90 minute classic can make it onto the 2012 program.

Good auld Seb, he'll let orienteering into the Olympics no problem!
Seriously though, no chance of London Olympics but with Glasgow bidding for the Commonwealth Games (2014?) i think this would be an ideal opportunity to aim for it. Why not?

I tried on behalf of the SOA some years ao... 2 or 3 to get O into a Commonwealth Champs in preperation for getting into the Games themselves. We had support of the Aussies and the South Africans. The thought was to host a CC in advance of the World Cup. BOF (Robin Field) were originally interested but as soon as it became obvious there was no route to additional funding the idea was dropped pretty quickly.
Other big hassle is that there is no one to negotiate for England... it has no governing body & while that posistion exists I imagine nothing will progress as fas as CG is concearned. They are very unlikely to accept a sport where one of the major countries has no national governing body.

Funny you should bring this up. I read somewhere last week that they were trying to get shinty as a demonstration sport should Glasgow get the games. I would think that orienteering has a slightly broader reach and hence a stronger case (unless they're playing the "Made in Scotland" card).
