I think the official line from controllers' guidelines is that tags placed prior to the control hanging should remain in place throughout the competition. Presumably this is in case of vandalised controls and the need for quickly re-establishing where the original site actually was.
However, at the British (and numerous events) I saw the tag before the 1. feature and 2. the control flag on a few controls (2 or 3). This is only occurs (for me at least) when a control is placed in a small depression/pit or in rough forest and then the tag is taped above the feature on a tree.
Can anyone back me up with the 'official line' on this? any thoughts?
PS. dont mean to criticise the British, was an good event with an awesome relay area.

Also to minimise the disadvantage to competitors arriving at the right feature if the control has been taken. I want them to be reasonably visible - working on the basis you should be able to run the course without significant delay even if there were no controls out. I was lazy this time - I only wrote the numbers on 1 side of the tape!

Cor blimey - with sight like that must get you as my next assistant controller - sometimes I took a good 3 or 4 minutes when I was looking for the planners bit of white tape - no wonder I took so long to check 180 sites
Tape in depressions is ok until you have a week of rain before the event and your tape is lost under water. Too low a tape on the moorland and it ends up getting eaten!
I like to keep the tape there - just for that one chance that if a nasty person does steal your control site they may miss the tape! but it's a weak reason and maybe I'm just stuck in my ways ! maybe been controlling too long!
