Naming Competitions

I was looking at the details for the National Event in Northumberland in November & wondered what happened to the Blue Star Trophy?? Then I thought what much greater impact for publicity a named event has.... Blue Star Trophy or National Event 6? Down south... SLOW Regional Event or OK NUTS Trophy...

Over here in LTU my club organised a night event last night... rather than just calling it a 'night competition' it was called 'OK Devyni Open Night Championships'..... names mean something

I think the Blue Star referred to the logo of Newcastle Breweries, makers of Newcastle Brown Ale, which is a blue star with a black Tyne Bridge within.

Might be that sponsorship from breweries is no longer allowed?

Given the amount of whisky dished out at the 6 Days Prize Giving I doubt brewery sponsorship is an issue:)

Correct on the Blue Star - UNOC/the event used to get some sponsorship from Newcastle Breweries (and have a blue star on the back of the O-tops). Since the sponsorship stopped a long time ago (not to mention the brewery now being the wrong side of the river, and UNOC now being in hibernation), the event has long since ceased to be the Blue Star, even while it was still being run regularly by UNOC.

Here in Germany, pretty much every event has a name (and a fairly regular place in the calendar) - so far I've been to the Fog Cup, the Elk Cup, Snowflake O, Hedgehog O, ... in fact the only events which don't have names are the national ranking events which are just called BRL...

My club OK Renen (Reindeer OC!) has a 2 day orienteering event every year called the Renlunken (Reindeer Trot / Jog) and a cross-country race called the Renluffen (harder to translate but possibly "the reindeer hitch-hike" ?!?

I think gross has a good point about naming events, including for selling the sport to newcomers. I think you have to be careful though:

Names that make the event sound more attractive: November Classic, South East League, Compass Sport Cup.

Names that might leave beginners confused a bit: South West Gallopen, Icenian.

Names that might give a misleading impression of the sport: Frolics Series.

This discussion could be extended to Club names too (which i think was in another thread). Some of the names are rubbish just like some of the event names and 'outsiders' aren't exactly going to be inspired by, for example, octavian droobers are they!

I think Octavian Droobers is a great name: stands out from all the usual boring geographical names (which themselves can cause problems), and has a strong historical meaning. At least it's spelt correctly: I think it's far dodgier having OK in your name

If you're not acquainted with British orienteering club names, those acronyms will certainly have you stumped.

A minor detail maybe, but this is the sort of thing that makes orienteering seem cliquey to the outsider. Which newspaper would publish these results? How many of their readers would understand them?
