Re lung capacity. There's no doubt brass players (prob woodwind as well but don't know) have big lung capacity but there is a difference - the speed of getting air in and out. That's all part of the training that enables oxygen to be delivered to the muscles. So while big lungs from whatever source are a head start you still need to do the intense training - e.g. intervals.

There is a difference between lung capacity, and the capacity to get oxygen in the blood stream and the capacity to get blood round the body and the capactiy to get oxygen out of the blood stream and into the muscles and the capacity to use the oxygen to effeciently produce energry and the capacity to efficiently use this energy to perfrom mucle contraction and the capacity to engage the correct muscle contractions to give the desired movement

On the musical instruments front, the bigger the better. As a clarinettist I played bass clarinet for a year. I don't know if it made any real difference, but 90mins on the bass was certainly tougher than on the normal clarinet.
A word of warning, you have to build up instrument size and breathing technique is important too. don't go thinking you can pick up a tuba and it will help you. It is important that you can play and breathe well on a normal clarinet, before a bass will help. it is the same technique but seems to require more power. I think it is the reason many kids play cornet before trumpet and clarinet before sax, correct me if im wrong.
Musical instruments are probably better for kids, as there is fairly easy access to teachers, bands, orchestras etc, through schools and local arts authorities. Also if you have a large lung capacity before you start serious training i'd imagine it must be an advantage.
For adults I'd recommend swimming, espcially the underwater swimming already mentioned.
But you have got to put the training in for a big lung capacity to be useful (usually my downfall!!!).
A semi-serious suggestion for the original question: get a job where you have to exercise?? this may be difficult if you have already trained for a certain profession, especially if its office based. Not quality training but it may help. as im not an elite im guessing a bit bout elite training!!!

It is the opinion of several experts in the field that the best way to increase lung capacity is to sing loudly during the run-in on majour competitions, so as to require the body to cope with moderated breathing and increased aerial output whilst at peak effort. [It is preferable to sing something that leads to maximum embarrasment - entertainment for others.]
All the best people do this.
