This morning the races start with the Middle Race in the hilly forests close to the town of Banska Bystrica in Slovakia.
1st start was at 0900 CET, 0800 UK.
The team is in good spirits and yesterday practised their river crossings and finish sprints on the model area, which overlaps with today’s finish of the middle race. Good Photo opportunity if only I was there!
Best of the Brits last time out in Australia in 2004 was Steve Heading with 27th & Charlotte Somers-Cocks in 31st.
Conditions are expected to offer fast riding, after the very recent hot and dry weather.
Expected winning race times are – 50-60 mins for Men and 40-50 mins for Women.

Early Leaders at the Finish
Womens
1. Lacigova CZE 77.29
Mens
1. Dauwalder SUI 74.40
3. Winksill GBR 79.08
Just spotted Killian Lomas in with a time 1 sec quicker than Phil's at 8!.
Looks like Phil finished closely with the current leader, after being passed and nearly catching him at control 8 for a good ride. Expected winning times were 50-60 so will be interesting to see if any of the later starters can go nearer.

Things hotting up in the womens race
The current world champion Michaella Gigon has gone through in 2nd behind the lead of Arlauskiane at 1st radio in 37.33, Janine Hensman looks on a good ride for GB currently in 16th in 42.04, recovering well after recent injury to her collar bone! Helen Winskill through in 22nd in 43.33.
Gelderman from NZL takes a nearly 5 min lead in the womens at finish in 72.18.
Where's the missus gone!??

Phew was getting a little worried till then!
Karen finishes in 25th currently in 88.13, but the new leader is the 2004 World Champ Gigon in 69.42.
Either the winning times published are wrong at 40-50 mins for Women or the course planners have got it seriously wrong in terms of length!?
Looks like I'm typing to myself

Ta Jess - my fingers were getting a little sore
All W starters thro 1st radio & leader was Schaffner Raber of SUI in 36.57,
Toni having a battle with Karen's time at 1st radio only 2 secs apart.
Helen at finish taking 16th currently, Janine in 21st.
Dont know what best GB womens result is at MTBO?
Anyone?

So possibly Britains best ever Womens result
With all women finished
Gigon of Austria retains title
Helen in 20th, matching her WOC Foot O result!
Nina Philips in 23rd
Janine in 25th
Karen in 37th
Toni in 47th

Manage to find 02 results courtesy of the Aussies, hope they can be so obliging with the cricket!
Best in 02 was Janet Prier with 24th in Long Race.
So that makes Helen Winskill's the best GB womens result in 20th, in the short 3 World Champs History.
Congratulations to Helen.
With Janine & Karen's results also, things look promising for the relay.
Best in mens so far is John Houlihan with 9th in Sprint, and 11th in Long, so the guys will be doing very well to beat that.
Back to the Mens Race after a short break for some work!
There will certainly be a new champion as Jackson of Australia is now down in 5th, with the Leader Ruslan Gritsan of RUS 67.02. Phil Winskill hanging on in 22nd off 7th start. Still 30+ riders to finish including Andy Conn & Steve Heading two of the last 3 starters.

Andy Conn looks like he has taken top spot for the GB men in 26th currently in a time of 77.10 just over 10 mins behind the winner Ruslan Gritsan of Russia.
Steve Heading finishes in 42nd. Just waiting for results to be confirmed as final.
Looks like the mens race was closer to predicted winning times.
Hopefully will get some feedback from the team on how the races actually were, later today.

Much as Andy would love to blame his middle result on bike problems (he had plenty of those the day before but none during the race!) his orienteering skills were sadly lacking in the early stages of the race and so decided to save his legs for the classic qual the following day.
AndyS's result aside, a great set of results for the guys and girlys. PB positions for Andy Conn and Helen.
From an Irish perspective it was absolutely fantastic to see Nina finish in 23rd. she's been training really hard with the Finnish team this year and I was delighted to see it paying off with a pb for her! Tomas and I are trying to work out what this sport is all about!
