Depends on who you are doesn't it? EMIT etc are fantastic for training as they don't require any of this complex planning malarky. But then as an orienteer SI is still quicker and I like the beep (unless EMIT now has one - I know it was in the pipeline).
Why oh why did you start this debate? I have a feeling it's dangerous...

Yeah - I understand from the planners and computer people that Emit is great and ofcourse the unitds in the forst are the cheap bit which makes it good in dodgy areas but I prefer SI. At the Masters last year I kept standing absent mindedly at the controls with my card in the unit looking at my map - it took a while to realise I was waiting for the beep

emit all the way, for a start they are quicker, and they have a back up. the new fangled ones also have the display which is good.
si tried to get me dsq'd once, so don't like it cos of that, and also the fact that people call them 'dibbers'!!!!

if anyone ran SOc's fantastic Novemeber Classic this year they will have got to use the new finish timing gate, just like in skiing. none of this fannying about having to dib you SI Card in some hole, 100% balls out to the line.
The only good thing about SI is it beeps and you can have different coloured cards. Emit you can go through your splits afterwards, instead of having to try and read them of you sweat soaked splits which have disintergrated...

So how much are these new fangled emit cards with the display? Can you go through your splits on the card as well?
The fact is that emit had their chance and they screwed it up by messing up big events. Now that ident has been adopted by most big events and most people have their own ident card it's unlikely emit will gain widespread use (IMHO anyway!)

I've heard a rumour Emit will be used at the Scottish 6 Days either next year or two years' after and also the O-Ringen sometime soon. Octavian Droobers are just about to invest in Emit. I don't think it's as dead in the water as you imagine. We used the new ones at the Masters and they were good. You can just swipe it over the control - but then of course the paper back up won't be much use.

The problem with using Emit at the scottish is you have then got to have a hell of a lot of cards to hire out to people as (virtually) no-one has them already.
Also, are there enough emit control stations for an event of that size?
Whilst I can see the merits of emit and think it's good, surely as a country we should make a joint decision and then stick to it? It appears to me that we have chosen ident, almost every club has invested in it, it works well, why change?

My mum will understand what you mean about having a ship load of emit bricks to hand out having done the classic, and there is now realy way down this. Just try and have a very big team doing this at the event to try and make it as quick as possible.
Control stations are not a problem, theres plenty of them, certainly more than you need for a full national event. I would understand if you thought that there may not be enough emit bricks for somthing like scottish, which gets about 3000 people. But i think that there are probably that many in the country, and if not i know that emit loan them out from norway, i seem to remeber having a box of 1500 or somthing in the house at one point.
Every club has inveseted in it??? thats BS. You probably mean every region. of course you would still be wrong. Down in the south i think there are only 2 sets of SI, or there were last time i knew. BOK, and SLOW (maybve all of SE). in the mighty SCOA we have the British Army, and they have a shed load of emit. And i think it is in the pipeline for SOC/SCOA to invest in more emit. Also the national orienteering centre at glemore has emit.
