SI has been accepted by most clubs as the system that they want to use. (maybe because it was the first system out i dunno) But i find ident much easier to use especially with the new cards they are much faster , (and multi coloured) i sure ident could come up with something along the lines of the emit eline finish.

no, of course it won't force you to go to lectures, it could make it look like you've been when you haven't. give the card to a mate who is going, and who would know any different? Bound to happen...

i remember testing out the SI system at a SCJS training once years and years ago, propers a long time ago. it was just coming out. the units were mounted vertically, the light was green, and the SI cards were made out of clear plastic. it was well good. Tom Booth, IT legend, had sorted it out for us.
i remeber once jan having some problems with my spanking V3 emit, some midweek army CC, forgot to punch the start. nob. so got splits from 1 onwards, and then they gave him the slowest split +30s or somthing for #1, which is impressive as it was about 300m and you definetly didnt take 11minutes...

ru sure that's ur punching technique ur talking about?
and yeah, the gits at the army thought giving me the slowest split would be fairest, even though that gave me a time about 9mins slower than the winner, when i hadn't finished outside the top 5 on any splits. and i went and did the same thing at the november classic last year, the bugger didn't start - i think i need help.

The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

actually emit was the first system to be used at an event... unless i am mistaken? i was at one of the first events - modum 95 along with other juniors from the Halden and Mysen BOF tours.
for what its worth i like both systems and think they both have good uses - emit for training and small events due to its planner/organiser friendliness, sport ident for big races as its the system most orienteers prefer to use when they race.

thats becuase SI did early advertising and got prestigious events like the scottish to use SI and people thought wow this is good and so more clubs considered buying SI than Emit. it only seems to be recently that clubs are considering buying Emit.

I've just been sent a flyer for a Quantock event this weekend which says
A quick search revealed it may have been used at KIMM - anyone know anything about it ?
the Joe Lee system of electronic punching will be used

see http://www.joelee.co.uk/jlcfrontpage/ibox.html - it's a bit fiddly to use (or at least it is during the kimm when you're knackered, but I can't imagine it being that good in O when you're in a bit more of a hurry to punch) - have to basically press a contact on the edge of the unit and in the middle (hard to explain without a unit to show it on). The feedback (little flashing light) was pretty hard to see as well - although that was two or three years ago I used it, I think the first time it was used, so they've maybe improved it a bit since then...
Still seems a bizarre decision to use it for a normal O event, though.

Used it at the Capricorn last year. You carry what looks like a large watch battery mounted in a bit of plastic. "Punching" involves making contact with one end of a 6 inch cylinder. It was often quite hard to get it to work - had to fiddle around to get the flashing light - not exactly high speed punching. Did get a nice bit of multicoloured string to hand it round your neck though.

Yes we do, and 9a.m. lectures are no fun for me either . Non attendance and poor performance are closely related (not totally). The problem, somewhat related to the KF debate, arises from the "not my fault" culture when exams are failed. And our "responsibility to our students" (i.e, we're not allowed to treat you like responsible adults anymore).
We need a record of non-attendence to convincingly argue it bl**dy well is your fault if you skip lectures and fail. No plans to buy SI yet.
(Well, it might be BOFs fault if they keep clashing national championships with lectures.)

Surveillance cameras. Unlike skipping the lecture, this is deliberate fraud and could get you (and your mate) chucked out. Don't laugh, its coming and they're there for your safety and pastoral care...
