Ah! the Midlanf night champs last year - I thought I was having a good run until I unfolded my map and found I'd been out an hour and was only half way run - still got to be W45 Mids Champ - by vitrue of grim determination - you could spot the people who'd donbe the night champs the next day - they were the ones crawling down the run in.
Rummour has it they were all East Midlands units that failed due to low batteries

i believe rocky got a bit of a reputation from his rants after that as well, or was that something else...

yes that was the one, quite funny at the time i seem to remember.
och them were the days of more failed SI units,
also i might add that sometimes the SI unit beeps, but you still get dsq'd, happended at the british relays 2000, my ident beeped happily all the way round the course, only for the poor wee girly to say i had mispunched - ERROR.
my ident was sent to the home for rehabilitating ident cards, and lo and behold, there was my info, hiding behind a thicket, too scared to rear its head in daylight!!!

Yup - I think it was 2002, or maybe 2001. They tried to be too clever and introduce a new system of just take any brick, scan the barcode on your number and punch a unit and it links the two up in the database. Then they were using a load of prototype version 3 bricks which it turned out weren't completely waterproof, particularly since it rained for about 40 days and 40 nights before the race and the entire area turned into a swamp. Result was that it took them about two weeks to get a list of the top 100 teams after 10 legs out, I don't think there ever were any intermediate times and there were rumours about the accuracy or otherwise of the results they did get out. Actually, I think it was 2002 since it was the same year the Swedes demonstrated how not to organise a world cup race, with one emit punch on the 4th control of a mass-start ungaffled race. Hmmmm. Now, who's organising WOC this year?

Aah the Cannock weekend... I remember... Sitting in Ironbridge yoof hostel into the small hours kicking brooner's ass at monopoly (I'm scared of the dark) wondering where all the night o-ers had gotten too. I believe driver's navigational skills were being put into question and everything. I also remember a certain Mr. Saunders announcing that he was due at the start line in under 40 mins and averaging over 100 (km/ph obviously ) in a shiny new vectra shortly afterwards... I think Mr. Strain put his money where his (extremely loud ) mouth was that day too!

That certainly is an unnecessary use of technology, I bet it would really piss off some of the lecturers if it beeped every time it was dibbed. does anyone actually have compulsory lectures? - ours are officially all 'optional'.
but anyway - WHY BOTHER???? - in general the lecturers don't care if you're not there, because if you're not they don't have to be either

it won't be to force you to go, however they may raise issues with persistant non attendance and generally if you don't do very well they'll check against your attendance and see whether they are related. I know physics take attendance with the ol swipecards (9am lectures at kb -harsh!).
