Are there many orienteers going to the LAMM. It's at Oban this weekend. Now, there's a thousand competitors that can be convinced that orienteering is worth taking up, in order to improve the navigation skills. And of course, they are using SPORTident so will be happy with the transition!
Unfortunately we can't wear O tops to advertise!

I'm going. You can spot the orienteers by seeing who has their own SI SI Card!
Anyone else think it's Mull?

It was superb weather for orienteers - lots of low cloud but not particularly cold. We ran both days in just an O-top and shorts.
Did anyone else have trouble with Checkpoint 8 on the B course on day 2 (157 - Stream 220m)? It was also on the A course.
We countoured across from 7, then climbed up the first proper stream which ran in a rocky gully. We climbed pretty high but couldn't find it. We came down it again and Checkpoint 9 (Knoll S Side) was in exactly the right place.

My husband's LAMM partner is convinced he saw a marmot on day 2... I'm no expert on alpine rodents, but I'm pretty sure marmots don't live near the coast! Any ideas what it was?? (It'll stop the two of them bickering about it for months to come.)

My guess for the Marmot would be a hair, about the right size, and possibly mistakable if it was standing still.
It was a good weekend, the conditions realy suited the O people, we must of been in the cloud over 50% of the time. The courses seemed good, ours was anyway and about the right length although some of the times on the shorter courses may of been long, is that the good runners getting lost?. There was enough route choise for us to mess it up twice on day one.
My only minor gripe was the execive seacretism about the venue. If people had been told on the Thursday that it was Mull and what time the ferries were there would not of been so many people getting to sleep at 1am on Friday night. Then the piper seemed to go around at somthing like 4.30 am waking you up again the next morning.

The secrecy...you either love it or hate it. As a regular LAMMer half the fun for the month before is speculating where it may be with co-competitors! On Thursday when Oban was announced I suspected Mull based on available terrain and transport logistics etc and prepared accordingly, admittedly not everyone can do this.I think late arrivers enjoyment was hampered, even worse for those who were turned away from the last ferry as it was full. 4 hours kip is not good MM prep even if you've got a chance of 10 hours on Sat night! I'm sure Martin will take notice in any comments passed to him but I wouldn't expect him to change this winning formula...

Martin in an email to all competitors explains...
........Thanks for letting the weekend unfold in the way it did and tolerating our way of doing things, especially if it wasn't so convenient for your own team. This is the LAMM and we don't like to compromise the ethos of novelty, surprises and adventures. All the hints are written in the detail and we did suggest that it was important to try to be at Oban for 7.30pm this year. The Sting was released on the website at 20:30 on Friday so that those back home could see how the event was to unfold for you........
It was a great event, and although we only got those four hours sleep on Saturday early morning we still managed!
