It was the 6 foot high nettles and seeing Em both running near tears a quarter way round her course and finishing in tears having had to "swim" through the nettles they were so high and thick. She finished off with stings on her arms, face, stomach, and her legs were a lumpy mess (sorry, em, but they were so bad GG was going to run in his overtrousers, he winced when he saw them!). Em wasn't the only one - it wasn't down to poor route choice! - my new tube of antihistamine cream got used up in the tent. It was pretty bad on last leg, I am so glad I wasn't on first.

Tess suffered really badly too her legs were red from top to bottom and Jo Halliday. These brave young things! I couldn't find my first control and when I eventualy did and was confronted by the head high nettles wimped out. Going for the clubs wimp of the year trophy I nearly returned to assembly without getting any controls. Perhaps I should have then they might have realised there was a problem with No.1.
This is not a complaint but a query on correct procedure. As the control was in the wrong place and many were disq for wrong punches. They were reinstated, however those who read the control code and spent time searching and eventually do are then penalised. Also the control was repositioned during the event so some later runners didn't have either problem. This means that the element of fairness has gone. I realise that the ultimate is to void the course and in this case I think that would be the whole of the event (except for Mini Relay and Junior Men/Women). I don't know if it would have been possible to remove the control from the times.

Only a few. I believe nettles particularly like damp locations. The map states, that it shows typical conditions Dec-April. Between May and November Vegetation is typically thicker than mapped. The network of paths change reularly and can become overgrown in Summer
The mapper chose not to represent his club. OI wonder why

And we thought it was bad when we went out - they had been tackled already yesterday I hear as they were so bad. I reckon the best plan is to RUN through them though - you don't get stung as much. Well I think you don't!

Yup probably a good plan - could be hard though. My previous post didn't make too much sense though (sorry) - I meant that it's better to run through them than try and walk and try and dodge them cos it doesn't work, you just get more stings

well apparently nettles grow best at temperatures around 26 degrees and with global warming as britain warms up there are going to be forests of tree high nettles in about 10 years - orienteering in body armour?
Luckly GG this won't be true. Rightly nettle growth will continue to spread a certain amount, but other native ground cover plants will also become more dominant with an increase of global temperature. For example Hedera helix (common ivy) will also spread. Furthermore, with a increase in the summer period trees will leaf slightly earlier, causing more shade, and thus less growth. Basically your not going to see any change. Pine forests are your best bet...though you'll have to deal with the brambles instead.
PS: FOUND: one large, sharp, very good bread knife -don't fancy my chances of getting that through customs!
