I've noticed that the harvester is struggling a bit for entries (at least that's what it said on the bof website). Someone suggested the other day that why didn't the harvester happen sat evening - sunday morning starting at (say) 7/8pm finishing late. Then having a social event for those who want it afterwards.
Personally I have to say the thought of running late appeals a lot more than having to get up really early to run and it would be a lot more fun to spectate. Imagine it, sunny evening, nice forest, few beers, bit of camping. Everything finished by about 2 or so then sleep and leave about 10am (with a whole sunday to look forward to rather than being tired all day).
Just an idea - I still think the harvester is a good event as it is.

possible reasons for lack of entries:
people in the uk just don't really care about relays or perhaps even representing their club that much, which is a shame but compare to sweden where everyone from 10 to 90 turns out for their clubs at events such as the 25 manna, ok this is a very different race.
people in the uk aren't that keen on night orienteering. 150 people at this years british champs - is this declining as well? (I can't be bothered finding out). I'm sure more people would be interested if given the chance, but there arent as far as im aware a huge number of night events occuring outside the spheres of the SENiLe, WNL & Deside Night Cup.
perhaps the camping also puts many people off (although they could as easily run and then go back to a hotel!), people in britain are getting to reliant on their home comforts and portaloos at events.
combine all these together...

also the website was lacking in details and the entry form is a bit archaic - A better web presence and some cheap promotion may have done wonders for entries.

I think it's hard for many medium sized or small clubs to get enough runners. Last year DFOK had 4 volunteers, not bad for a small club, but not enough to form a team. I'm not sure how you get round this. An all night relay needs at least 5 runners. Does the ad hoc class allow teams from different clubs? How about regional teams?

Nope. You can only do what we've done which is have a n/c team. Needs either one of two things:
1) Allow scratch teams to be competitive
2) Combine all the small clubs we have into bigger ones
I doubt 2 will happen unfortunately.

Is it meant to be an all night relay? The women's starts at 1:45 (I think) and has 5 legs. I think the last two legs are virtually always in the light (correct me if I'm wrong) If you started at about 8pm you'd just do it the other way round wouldn't you - the first 2 legs at dusk and the others in the dark.
I don't much like night orienteering so when I've run the harvester I've had a leg where it's been light or almost light (maybe my team just aren't quick enough )

The women's relay starts at 1.30am and the fastest possible winning team would finish at 5.30 am. In any case I think it will be won before 7ish.
If all legs were going to be night legs it would have to be run at a different time of year, maybe late August/ September like the Peter Palmers.

This year the Harvester falls right in the middle of GCSE's. We usually field a junior team but our key runners are all doing GCSE's, and have a heavy week of them next week. Unless the Harvester is on your doorstep it means a weekend out as well, once you've travelled, and recovered. Given thar it's a great event but I can't see many entries in Scotland next year as that will really be a long haul for most of the night leaguers! Yeah. I know that the Scots do night O but they are small clubs. If cheap flights are an option I would think the best way to inc entry next year would be to put on coach transport from an airport!

Indeed guest you team may not be quick enough... Pillar woods this year will be very fast for the leading teams, and theory being at a pace of 5.0 min/k which maybe a bit quick at night?, gives the following:
1) 8km 40mins
2) 6km 30mins
3) 11km 55mins
4) 8km 40mins
5) 11km 55mins
6) 6km 30mins
7) 14km 70mins
-Roughly 5hrs 20mins then for the whole thing.
Starts at Midnight, so should be finished by 5.20am
Sunrise is at 4.35am
So the last half of the last leg will be in the light...though of course theres the half light of dawn.
Assuming the times are quick....which i rekon they might be, i'd hedge my bets that last leg might need to go out with a torch!
