Just had the following message sent to the SLOW email list:
"All
I have just been contacted by someone called Cathryn O'Neill from the BBC who is researching for a BBC follow-on programme from a speed dating programme. The BBC are following a lady who was in the original programme and this lady has said that she would like to try out orienteering. The catch is that the event that the BBC would like to film must be sociable and she must get to meet people and it must be in the next few weeks.
I have recommended that the Trail Challenge next Tuesday would be a good event as it is quite sociable (i.e. meal at Hawker centre afterwards) and an alternative would be the Surrey Hills Race (but it is less sociable). Given that we might have the BBC filming next week, can I please ask that as many people turn up as possible!
If I can, I will provide an update.
Cheers
Mark"
Sounds like a good chance to get orienteering onto national TV and get a bit of good publicity. So come on, everyone who possibly can, please get down to Richmond on Tuesday night and support the event.
These are good fun events to do anyway, mass start 10k, 6k and 2k courses, with a congregation in the pub afterwards. Starts at 7:30pm. Full details on the SLOW website - http://www.sloweb.org.uk

A quick google for "Speed Dating Orienteering" seems to show that there is a whole world of O that I was completely unaware of...
"I'm A Singleton Get Me Outta Here! is run by P7UK, the outdoor and indoor events management company. The adventure consists of 10 girls and 10 guys spending the weekend in a log cabin deep and taking part in activities and challenges, ranging from abseiling to bike riding, night orienteering and 'It's a knockout' competitions."
Wow! And I thought Night O was about being hopelessly lost, cold,.. with your light about to fail... I never considered it romantic...

Funny you say that.. the job I have been allocated to help for on the night is "making sure that the star is introduced to people and enjoys the event!"
- as I am the only pre-entered runner under the age of 30!
Mind you I am now expecting lots of EODs from all the single 20-something male orienteers in the south-east hoping to get lucky...

and if she's desperate enough to come lookin for beardie orienteers she's unlikely to be a stunner now is she?

Orienteering on TV
I've often thought that a 'street o' race would be even more entertaining that those 'Run London' or 'Run Britain' street-running/acrobatic kind of thing programmes.
Think of the excitement - just a case of getting someone to film it.
And how about having a 'Superstars'-O, with celebs getting lost around, say, York city centre, with people hassling them for autographs? (Of course our famous orienteers always get stopped in the street anyway (or do they?).)

Will someone be filming the York race? Could they send a sample of it to Extreme tv? (I'll be at SINS!)
