Very Northern Swedish Club Needed!
Anyone know of any links to any swedish clubs in the Abisko area? Its about 200km north of the artic circle in Lappland and borders Norway. I'm going there in about a month and would like to go for some terrain runs and need to enquire about some maps. Cheers.
Fair play

IFK Kiruna is your best bet:

If you look at this page you can see that there are (old) maps in Abisko, Björkliden and Riksgränsen:

Think i may have done a module along those lines. The most glamerous field trip we got offered was a jaunt to eccy woods to look at birds or something. And yes the feathered variety before anyone says anything, although the other kind would have been better...
How would you kill a tiger armed only with a biro?

IFK Kiruna has about three members who actually orienteer (I train twice a week with one of them) and Kiruna is not exactly that close to Abisko. I can see if I can find out about what is available in the way of maps. Just be warned that in a month the mosquitoes may be unbearable. They had snow up there yesterday as well so be prepared for anything.
The best chance of getting maps in the Abisko area is by getting hold of old BAMM maps (Björkliden Arctic Mountain Marathon). Björkliden is just west of Abisko.
If you are prepared to head across into Norway then there are a few clubs up towards Tromsö. The midnight sun galoppen (midnattsolsgaloppen) homepage will give you a link to some of the clubs - the event is being held this year, at the end of June, start of July.
Most of the activity up here in the north of Sweden is centred around Boden and Luleå (I live in Luleå, on the coast) but the season starts next weekend in Haparanda. The ice on the sea is only now starting to fully melt away (I could still ski on the sea two weeks ago) so training has only now really got going.
If you're passing this way you're welcome to pop in.
