Loughborough had a thriving O club (LSOC) when I was there (88-92) i.e. being able to fill an entire coach for the freshers event, and a minibus full of people going to most weekends events. We also had trips to the O-Ringen in 1990 and 95. Unfortunately, I think it went the same way as a lot of university O clubs and folded in the late 90's.
If there's a few of you going, you could always try resurrecting the club. As the university has quite a good sporting reputation, the Athletic Union always used to be very generous with their funding of student sports clubs. I'm sure that they could be talked into helping you get something off the ground. Perhaps use this forum to nab some other volunteers, get something organised for the freshers day, and then introduce as many people as possible to the joys of orienteering. In myday, the majority of club members had not been orienteering before going to university, but we always got a good intake of new recruits each year. All it takes is a few experienced orienteers to pass on the appropriate skills / review events in the pub afterwards. Possibly the biggest problem is having people with cars, or who are old enough and have held a driving licence long enough to drive a union minibus (need to nab a few pHD students in the latter case). You could even bring back the purple/white or black/purple/white O kit!
There's nice running out from the campus up to the Outwoods and Beacon Hill (both LEI O areas). Events in the peak district & cannock chase are easy to get to, with the Lakes & north Wales good weekend breaks.
SLOB, the ex-Lufbra O club seems to have gone the same way, although there are still a fair few ex loughborough orienteers around.

I'm based at Loughborough so at least you could have potential training partners in either Andy or I depending on the speed you run at and potential lifts to events. That said we are going travelling in October for a few months but will be back in January.
Areas for running are absolutely fantastic here - areas for O are only ok. athletics club is really good too. Finance for O club - there is already some money in the account that hasn't been used up by previous groups of students - but you have to get 25 people in the club for official purposes I think.
I can tell you lots about halls of residence and stuff if you are interested in coming here - just drop me a pm.

Orienteering in Loughborough/Leicestershire
Yes, you are all quite right, there once was a thriving O club at Loughborough Uni, however, people move on and new one's come......
Leicestershire OC (http://www.leioc.org.uk) has a full fixture list, plus an active Summer League (14 events this year) and together with the neighbouring clubs, Nott's (NOC), Derbyshire (DVO) and Lincolnshire (LOG), ensure that there is always something on most weekends, within easy reach.
The East Midlands Orienteering Association (http://www.emoa.co.uk) affiliates university clubs, in fact Loughborough has a vacancy at committee of the EMOA. The club was known as LSOC and had a web page at http://www.uniservity.net/club_homepage.asp?clubid=3910, but sadly this now seems to be defunct.
In comment about Leicestershire's areas, we do have some excellent woods, such as Grace Dieu, Belvoir East, Wakerley, in face we probably have more event areas that our neighbours due to the activity of our land resource officer.
If you want to form a new closed club at Lufbra, then both LEI and the EMOA will be happy to hear from you and support you in what ways we can.

Sorry I may have come accross as negative by saying O areas were only ok - I meant relative to fantastic running areas - still some lovely woods for orienteering - not same technical quality as lake district or anything but still really nice.
