Why has a thread about an excellent bit of publicity degenerated into infantile sniping about different newspapers and cotton-wool culture? Anything that improves the sport's image in 'Middle Britain' has to be good.
Funny that everyone seems to think that someone else is to blame for cotton-wool attitudes. But, as a Guardian reader for 30 years, I can absolutely, categorically say that it wasn't people like me.

the average daily hit on the HOc website was 55. on Friday there was 73 hits and by 8.30pm on saturday a further 80 - but that was probably distorted by the link Old Man HOC put in from this thread. the daily average has now gone up to 64.
It would be interesting if any other webmasters could have a look at thir hit rate over Friday and saturday to se if there was any change.
At the Bok trot today there was such a high number of EOD that they ran out of maps. Of the 9 runners on the white, 6 were Ind and did not appear to tie in with anyone taking part in the schools' league - it was of course a lovely day and the bluebells were beautiful.

35mm film canisters
Does anyone know of anything a 35mm film canister can be used for in orienteering?
I could put it into a pithy one-or-two sentence e-mail, for inclusion in The Guardian's letters page (there has recently been a chain of about a hundred letters regarding the uses of a such canisters). If it was published, it would therefore allow orienteering to have some kind of profile in a politically-balanced portfolio of newspapers. By the way, I don't know Mrs H, but her letter-writing idea sounds like a great one to tap into the general public.

Film canisters
Thanks for the responses - any more before I fire off an e-mail to The Guardian?
A running-related use that has appeared there so far is that it could hold Vaseline (just enough for a marathon or other long race) - the container is then put in a bum bag or pocket.
How about as a SI Card holder? Or to hold painkillers for the KIMM? (I took fifteen Ibuprofens during last year's competition.)

completely non "o" use but I'm going to post it anyway to annoy my elder daughter, who filled one with engine oil & put it in the freezer to test viscosity or something for Physics coursework. Somehow it ends up in the fridge, which is where her father keeps his film before it's been exposed..... he wasn't very happy
