Hayfever
Is it possible to randomly develop hayfever at any point? I seem to have the mild symptoms with a tickly throat and runny nose but it doesn't feel like a cold, and have done for a week or so. I've been training and felt fine (until today - rest time!) so just wondered if it could be hayfever. Anyone in the know?

I had very very minor hayfever as a kid but last couple of years has got quite bad. Don't know if that helps...

You're the medic - you tell us
Anyway - you probably know this - hayfever is an allergy to pollen, and in most cases a specific type of pollen. This can be a group of plants - grasses, trees etc, or it could be very specific. People who get it very bad sometimes will have a 'vaccine' containing the relevant pollen(s) to build up an immunity to them. In your case it could be going somewhere different (like Shotover, Yorkshire) has exposed you to something different which has triggered a reaction that may die down in a few days.
On a year-to-year basis, things can change wildly - I never had it as a young kid but then got it very badly in first year of secondary school - it's been back to various extents since but never that bad. This year the tell-tale symptoms are now appearing and hence I'm feeling a bit crap, although the itchy eyes are the worst bit.
Might be worth getting some antihistamine anyway and see if it has any effect. will help the nettle stings from last night stop itching if nothing else... Other people say local honey is good to help it as well.

Hayfever
I believe it can develop at any time. I was fine until I was 7 then I suddenly started getting it. From then until early-teens it was asthmatic and I could never run at all in the spring or summer. Eventually I had injections, but these have since gone out of fashion - and be very careful if you have them. My first doses were fine but a booster a couple of years later put me in anaphylactic shock - 2.5 days totally out cold even after the adrenaline antidote ! I still get hayfever every year, but much milder, and would now rather put up with the itchy eyes and runny nose that chance any medication. I find sunglasses help in bright light.
Generally, I think its supposed to fade with the passing years, not get worse - but maybe all today's processed food is a factor leading to increased prevalence of allergies ?
If you do decide to take medication, check the contents carefully, esp. if you have aspirations re. selection / internationals etc. If any of the ingredients are Prohibited you will need to apply for a TUE (Theraputic Use Exemption), either Full or Abbreviated depending on the ingredient and how it is taken. See http://www.uksport.gov.uk/did/ for details. (I know the elite will already know about this but some of the "up and coming" may not).

Apparently, "the best time to take honey in order to relieve the symptoms of hay fever, is commencing January through to March, the idea being to keep your immune system ticking over until the pollen becomes a feature of the air you breathe. Find a local beekeeper http://www.beedata.com/localhoney/index.html and ask them to sell you honey along with cappings (they contain a lot of pollen), take 1 teaspoon full daily." I'm not quite sure about the cappings - I feed mine back to my bees, and I'm not local enough to you (but you can buy some of mine at the 6-day if you like).
I don't usually suffer, but I do feel snuffly at the moment (not surprising when house is surrounded by 92 acres of rapeseed) so I have a tablet (Boots 1-a-day thingies) that seems to work. They also stop Snotman (PFB Jnr) having projectile sneezing fits.
Maybe...

It seems it can come and go at various times in your life. Elder miss h. suffers. Selenium is meant to be useful - it has been irradicated from our wheat supply but is very important in building up the immune system which could combat any allergic response. Like Porky says - these things need to be initiated well before the onset of the season.

I could never get on with the hayfever pills, even the non drowsy had me nodding off. I then discovered Boconase nasal spray which I find superb. It takes about 3 days use to build up and can be bought at full prescription strength over the counter. There are other similar products containing Beclomethasone which are equally good and cheaper.
My hayfever kicked in during my early teens, but has improved over the years.

Watch the Beconase Nasal spray if you're going for internationals; on the UKSport Drugs database its Permitted in training but Prohibited in competition. However, you do only need an Abbreviated TUE to get over this, and these should be accepted once received rather than needing a committee decision.

Hayfever can develop at anytime. I never used to have it but about 4 or 5 it suddenly came on really bad.
It's taken a while to get the balance right but now I take 1 Cetirizine tablet a day, 2 becanase nasel spray doses and 8 octicrom eye drops once a day. It's noticable that if you forget to take them you can feel the symptons coming on almost immediately.

The symptoms you have described are very similar to a virus that my son had in the week prior to the FCC finals. He had a sore throat and heavy sneezing. I had had something similar the week before. We both have hay fever and wondered whether it was an allergic reaction to the rape seed coming out. It was definately a virus, not a bad one, but enough to affect fitness for a while.
Having said all that it may be an allergic reaction to some pollen or something else which has sensitised you. I have suffered hay fever since age 8, and John developed it at the same age. The month of June and July was always a misery. I had to stay indoors Antihistamines just made me feel drugged up and nose sprays left my nose dried up for weeks after the season finished.
Then three years ago a medically qualified doctor I know who used to practice in homeopathy advised me to take two tablets of mixed pollen for two weeks before the season. Since then I have been cured and John's symptoms are decreasing yearly as his immune system is boosted by taking the mixed pollen. I can now go running through grass and not be affected whereas before I would be really troubled. I have also been cured of other conditions through homeopathic treatments he has recommended.
So in conclusion I would give the symptoms a week. If they are still around then consider the treatment options which these collection of messages have outlined. Hope it is just a virus and you soon get better.

That's a bit confusing, because and an allergic reaction to rape seed isn't a virus
