Well I'm going to differ to the majority that have posted so far. I did find Klebe's post offensive at the time - it cast serious aspersions on the integrity of selectors - and I don't see why one should be able to hind behind a veil of anonymity in doing that. If not prepared to say it with your name attached, then don't say it. Maybe having to put your name to something (even if only an alias) might just make one think twice. As Klebe said in his apology, a sh*tty day and disappointment can lead to one shooting one's mouth off rather too quickly (as know from personal experience ).

I am not a big fan of anonymous guest postings, and I tend to take less notice of them than if someone has put a name to them. However, I think Klebes original post was posted as a Guest to try and protect his daughter and her O future rather than to keep himself anonymous. It was controversial, but he didn't say anything he wouldn't say in a car park at an O event (or at training!). There has been lots more said on this website that is more offensive!
As has been pointed out, just because an IP is logged, the poster could be anybody. Over some weekends we have up to 10 people staying and browsing, some registered (eg Fatboy), some not. I would hate to think our guests postings were attributed to me or to Stodge by the moderators!

Anything which prevents a page of comments like...
that IS out of order and instead of posting anonymously if you have something worthwhile saying you should let us all know who you are. just out of interest, who are you referring to?
Anonymous posters don't get the same degree of respect being shown to them, particularly when they post a controversial thought!
It was obvious from Klebe's apology that he felt it wasn't the right way to go about it. On balance, and it is a debatable matter, Mharky was probably right, and it will perhaps prevent similar in the future. Prevent not just the original anonymous post but the OTT(debatable) comments that follow.
Just as with newspapers Nope is responsible for the items that appear on its website. Legally responsible. A snotty letter via the editor may not get published. Often 'name and address supplied' appears. The editor makes the decision.
My point.... it is borderline, but in this case I think Mharky did the right thing. It has set a precedent, and informed us all of the real nature of anonymity, and how to protect it!

Again it is important to separate out what are essentially two different issues here.
1 - is it right to post scurilously as an anonymous guest
2 - is it right for a person with privileged information to use it.
I agree with Stodgetta that for the most part I simply do not pay as much attention to anon posts. I didn't find Klebe's original post particularly scandalous and assumed it to be any disaffected junior/parent and not unduly disrespectful to the selectors who have notoriously difficult job to do. Klebe's particular case when known was far more persuasive and powerful and made me look very closely at the selections - which I actually find broadly acceptable and logical. JWOC seems to have been a done on the day deal, the tours are fairly broad, Start is pretty narrow. there are only a couple of questions i'd raise (injury advice and the lack of a courteous and encouraging note to those being dropped from start)
I really don't have much of a problem with anon posts and the moderators are our editors to make sure things don't get really sticky.
On the second point tho' - although i may have a burning curiosity to know who is doing the posting, i can't accept that Mharky was right to reveal Klebe. afterall - It might not have been Klebe at all - it could have been jo-Jo - or even G on a home visit
anyway - it's much more fun to be offensive in person - look at me and Gross

I don't condone what some guests say but if we're to have guest posts then they should stay anon. IMO the IP log should be kept but only accessed if requested by the police. As many people of said an IP adress doesn't tell you who's done it. It's a bit like if you get caught in a speed camera - your car registration doesn't tell the police who was driving but gives them a good place to start looking. Somebody will be the official owner of that IP address, even if a temporary address, and if it was as serious enough for the police to be involved I'm sure they'd remember who was using the computer(s)!
I think there's enough sensible people on this forum to police out stupid posts without having to "out" them.

Thanks for the debate.
For those who do not agree with "Guest" posting please remember that this could be route for "whistle blowers".
For example: People at BOF to inform us unofficially whats in the news.
Agree with most peoples sentiment that if your not willing to put your name to it then put up and shut up. He says under a pseudonym, what a sh*t!

Just to reiterate what Pyrat has already posted:
'...people should be allowed to be completely anonymous and post controversial comments to spark heated debate.
Unfortunately to avoid cases of harassment and threats we log the ip's of users, so moderators have the ability to work out who guest users are under these cases.
Mharky should not have abused his power as a moderator.'
This will not happen again...we respect peoples decision to post anonymously
