Thanks for fixing that Jon. and Guest - why don't you identify yourself, or point out the problems to people directly rather than moaning about them on here? Would you carry on moaning if they weren't fixed because none of the organising/results team read this forum? These people are volunteers after all, and the show put on by them at the events was fantastic.

this is all a bit of a storm in a tea cup isn't it? Stodgetta posted to say the splitbrowser was up and running, guest said it wasn't working properly - which seems to have been true, everyone said guest was wrong, which he wsn't and he got annoyed and had a go. I don't think it was about the event at all. Guest is obviously very young - and i have a shrew idea who he is - it no big deal.
I'm far more interested in Jon darley's following comment
I saw nope in the credits - what was that all about then?

Well the code is available from them - you could write a patch

However we do actually have day jobs and so you do have to wait until the evening for changes to be made.
Communication. A quick message saying they would be fixed later in the day would have helped. The response the guest got from Old Fogey (someone involved in the event) was that the stuff was working (when clearly it was not).
Anyway, thanks for fixing them.
Stodgetta wrote:Nice to see everyone makes mistakes out there!
Being able to be out in the area for the sprints was good for this. You could watch the top people make mistakes
Though possibly I should have learnt from them, as I then made a two minute error at Battersea myself

It is a shame, we had an offer of help from Nope, but it didn't actually happen. Hence why you received credits in the final details. Never mind we can't alway deliver on what we say we will can we.

Nopesport.com never committed to any sort of technical support for the world Cup weekend. We would have liked to help more but unfortunately we were not in position to do so due to other commitments.
The only thing we said we would do was to cover reporting for the races. We feel we fulfilled that commitment and 'delivered on what we said' and thanks again to our reporters for that.
We also run this site in our spare time so try not to commit to what we cannot deliver, that is why we could not & didn't offer more help.

I actually did respond as soon as I saw the posting re the problems with Splits browser. Or rather I got it fixed and immediately reposnded. They delay was minimal. A quick message is acknowleding the request is only possible if you have the tim eto read Nope during your working day. A luxury not enjoyed by many

JD - please think about what you are saying here and whether it should really be done on a public forum. Nopesport.com have done a heck of a lot for orienteering over the past couple of years. I obviously don't know what was offered by whom but I think a private converstion between the two of you would probably be better in this case than accusations and threats which we can all see.

Agreed. I am happy to leave it there. I hope my point has been made. Perhaps a little more thought by some before berating those who are making efforts to develop and promote the sport. After all you never know who you are addressing and when you might need them for the cause.
As you say it is a public forum and you do need to be carefull. I would never post actual content of a private details of a private email discussion without the consent of all parties.

As Technical Director for the World Cup, I had a hand in shaping both the overall philosophy and structure of the event and also in directing the massive technical support required. The technical team, under Jon Darley, spent the best part of a year and a half working towards the event, often having to change plans completely as the programme went through its regular upheavals.
So I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Jon and his group (especially Ian and Jon Marsden, Mark Stodgell and Andrew Leaney) for their loyalty and for the professionalism with which they approached their many tasks.
Most onlookers simply take for granted the technical support for an event such as this. But those more closely acquainted with it know that Jon's team were the first in each arena in the morning/night before and were amongst the last to leave too. Five continuous days dealing with technology never used before for UK orienteering meant a high-stress roller-coaster ride for those at the heart of this operation so I hope that we can be forgiven if we seem a little tetchy about some of the ignorant criticisms made of the optional service we wanted to provide to those not at the event.
Thanks again Jon et al. You all did a great job!

Hi Jon Darley,
Nice to meet you, I am Alastair Brunton.
Below is an email conversation pasted that I had with Jon Marsden regarding nopesports involvement in the world cups.
I am very much a part of nope. We forfilled exactly what we agreed to. It seems like an instance of hey he said he would help a bit, lets assume he is responsible for a big chunk. Bad mouth me if you want but at least say it to my face / get your facts straight.

Hi Jon,
Hi im alastair, the lead developer from nopesport. We are pretty keen
to integrate nopesport with the world cups on competition day.
Let me know what you are looking for and we can flesh this out further.
Id send you a longer email but im working at my 'proper' job at the moment.
Cheers,
Alastaier
Hi there,
The concept is fairly simple at this stage. We are trying to create
a portal to house the following stuff.
- Earlier days final results and splits
- Today results and splits update every (2-5) minutes
- Commentary either streamed (on external site) or chunked into low quality
MP3s and uploaded every minute or so.
- News articles from the field including pictures etc.
This should be focused on the Wcup races but would ideally also cover the
FCC, UK and other public races that are going on as well.
This will be linked from our main web site and would be where we would
encourage everyone to go "on the day" for information.
In terms of technical details the new version of OE and MT (Stephen Kramers
software) are meant to have the ability to automatically output the splits
and results web pages every x minutes. These will contain people not yet
finished as well because of the radio controls. We will stage these onto a
server in the field and then push them onto the Internet (presumably by
ftp). If the format needs altering that would need to happen on staging
server or some server on the Internet.
It may also be possible to do IOF XML format for this and this may ease
reformatting but I have not played with it. (If you are not familiar with
OE/MT let me know and I will send you a link and keys).
The streaming is less advanced but the theory is to take a PC on the
commentary audio output and then write a small app to create low quality MP3
of the stream, creating a new file every minute. Again staging this in the
field to prevent slow internet connections etc from affecting the business
end of capturing the information.
The final component is the news and editorial content to hopefully
complement the splits and results information.
Hopefully this makes some sense !

Hi Jon,
Apologies for not getting back to you we were discussing the email and
talking about the reporting involved and who would so it. It seems
that you have it all in hand bar the reporting and supersaint (ian
nixon) said he would be there in a reporting capacity.
One thing, we would be able to use an IOF XML feed for live results
and splits? Id be interested to play with this - although a friend of
mine has attempted to parse this xml recently and claims that its
invalid which would be quite funny.
I dont want to drive people away from the main site on the day so we
will encourage people to go to the site for info but still provide
some live content on nopesport.
Cheers,
Alastair

Thanks Alistair,
Its great news that Ian is coming to cover the event.
On the web site to say it is all in hand would be unfair. We know
roughly what content we have but don't have the time to focus on it as much
as I would really like. If you were interested in doing something on this
area I would really welcome it. If you are interested then can I suggest we
chat at the JK. Strangely enough I will probably be in the commentary van!
On the XML stuff I am going to have to play with this shortly so I
will send you a few exports to see if they are helpful. IOF also want the
information in this format.

So we never agreed to anything that we didnt deliver. From nopesport's main role as a news driven website I think we did a great job. ( congrats to the reporting team ) I was on holiday in skye running up hills and had nothing to do with it.
From the last message you can see a plea for some help, but nothing was done about this due to the massive amount of work I have to do, day 2 day on other projects.
The main aim was using nopesport to cover the world cups, not write your software for you. It probably would have been ripped apart by the non tech respecting audience but thats another issue.

Not wanting this to grind on but i'd just like to further on David May's post and say that we here at nopesport appreciate what the WC tech team (and everybody else for that matter) did for the world cups weekend and being in a similar position as you guys (working in a technology medium, trying to further orienteering etc.) we understand the frustrations of it all when things go wrong & criticisms are made etc. So congrats on a largely successful weekend
As far as the nopesport side of things i'm sure it was a simple miss-communication, which happens, and nothing was meant by comments made.
We are all in the same business of trying to develop & promote our sport, orienteering, and i hope everybody continues to put the efforts we have up til now.

Do tell? I know OE doens't put out the ampersand character (&) correctly in its XML but other than that conforms to the standard. If you've got any info on problems I'd like to know in case it causes problems in the work I'm doing.

This was the issue I asked you about. The XML doesn't seem to be at fault. I just haven't put any more time into that particular project since then.
