Was it me or were the trophies NAFF. Only saw them from a distance but they looked like the ones that were given at JK a few years back . Just three sticks of wood which didn't appear to be quality stuck on a base.
I'm sure if I won one I,d be pleased but I expected better

I am told they were a representation of the Leith Hill tower.

In fact hand crafted by a very good local orienteer -the 2005 M60 JK champion (among many other things) - Mike Murray.

from oak trees in leith hill area which were brought down in the late 80's. Pritty cool really. Keeping it real with local produce.
I didnt get to see them upclose, although i was there when they described them over the commentary. Similar to the jk 99 trophys which were the tower on leith hill?
Dont knock them, im sure if you won a trophy at a world cup you wouldnt be claiming it was crap!
Although the world ranking event in spain i was at the Mats troeng and lina backstrom went home with life sized broad swords!

My son won a Mike Murray wooden trophy at JK and was very pleased with it. In fact I only mentioned to Mike on Sunday that it was one of the nicer trophies in our house (and yes, before you say it, we have quite a few trophies of various styles )
With the JK ones, there were various extras on them depending on your position.

I was the volunteer who organised the prize giving and commissioned the prizes for WCup 2005. As I handed out the last trophy to the prize winners, I wish I'd taken a photo to post here / put on the big screen at the event so people could see them close up. I looked at lots of options prior to ordering them, such as engraved tankards or glass bowls, and I asked some of the GB squad for their opinion as to what was the best option. I loved the idea of having something so unique and local to the area, but perhaps I'm biased!! I'm not quite sure what people like Simone are going to do with 4 towers from this one event - as one of my friends commented, she must have a very big trophy shelf.
I'll hunt through some of the event photos and if I can find anything close up, I'll post it here. Hindsight is a great thing!

Don't understand? Why is it important that it was made by a very good orienteer? I'd much rather it was made by a very good craftsman. I don't care whether they can orienteer or not!
That's not to say I don't applaud the sentiment of trying to make the trophies original and relevant to the location. I do. I'm just not sure what being M60 JK champion has anything to do with it ...

Does anyone know if the winners of the Surrey 5-O age classes get any kind of momento?

Mike is a professional craftsman as well as an excellent orienteer. This combination gives added value to the trophy.
He has made some oustanding trophies for SE competitions which are so much better than many of the JK/BOC ones.

There are mementos for the first three on Long / A courses and the first place on short / B. We didn't have chance to present them at Leith, partly due to the bad weather at the elite prize giving, and partly because we needed to check the final results. The prizes are Zefal water bottles with the event logo on the side (as seen at the FCC and YOF prize givings)
As soon as Anne May is happy with the results I'll post here to let people know they can collect them from me at future events. Sorry we didn't get chance to do the full prize giving - I know my husband was looking forward to the chance to finally stand on a podium!

Having read the comments I went back and studied my sons trophy from JK 1999 and asked him his opinion.
Maybe his was not as good as some but it is a planed hexagonal tower piece of wood, poss Octagonal, set into a less planed square tower. On this is written in ink JK 1999 2nd place. It wasn't burnt on or anything.
My son has many trophies from events, including love spoon JK 1998, celtic cross JK1997, as well as two lovely trophies from twin peaks one is a bobbin which is crafted from wood set on a plaque. He certainly did not rate the wooden trophy as special.
He also has a collection of mugs. He very much would have liked to have won clotted cream at British this year or the embroidered towel from the JK.
I accept that the trophy may have been from local Oak but we were not aware of it and the shaping although symbolic doesn't indicate what it represents I thought it was London Tower blocks.
The gasometres from Battersea power station would have been more distinctive

maybe you should take on the job of commisioning trophys for events becuase they would be much better?
I thought the trophies were good because they were from the local area, had significance and relevance to the event (unlike a face flanel or something?).
You cant cater for every winners needs, but then winning is not all about what your going to win in orienteering is it? Anyways a world cup winners trophy would have an interesting story to tell what ever it was.

You can't have been listening at the relay prizegiving because the commentator explained what the trophy was at that time.
