It's very slow this evening, even on a university connection.

Look guys...the IT team are stressed to hell over this - I've been talking to them today. It's not their fault at all, it's the provider of the service. Everything was tested, everything worked, they were supplied with a faulty product when it finally came down to the day. Trying to solve this over a Bank Holiday weekend is not going to happen, and the poor guys are tearing their hair out. As Ange said today - if you have a computer problem, you fix it, if your phone line's down, you've gotta go back to the telephone company. This is their problem now. These guys have worked incredible hours at the expense of their normal jobs to get this underway, and believe me, they are far more disappointed than you can imagine. This sniping is not helping anyone.
The reason the Scandies etc get such good soverage is that they are sponsored by the major media and telecommunications companies over there. Despite trying for a long time to get similar backing over here nobody stepped forward, and so they were left with a limited budget and volunteer expertise.
This mud slinging is just getting too much. Grow up people.

The IT team have given up on the ISP due to the slow site, and it has been transferred to the JK ISP to improve performance. The World Cup website is much, much faster, now. There is an automatic redirect from the original world cup website.
The Nopesport DVD on the big screen went down well today. Stodge got goosebumps when Craney finished the atmosphere was so fantastic with all the cheering, crowds rows deep down the run in, the commentary, etc.
It has been excellent commentary interacting with the big screen, too, with fab terrain filming, route discussions with race leaders and Dickies armchair interviews. Andy and Chris were stunning.

I made my earlier comments when it took me 3 attempts to load a page that merely contained a results list from one class from the Surrey Five-O. this shouldn't have anything to do with the satellite link and the problems the team are having with that. When it finally worked it took 10 or more seconds to load the data. It's only a page of text 10kB big, and it's directly connected to the Internet. I'd never experienced a site as slow as that while I have been at university - to put it into perspective if everything is working properly you'd get faster with dial-up.
A server should not be that bad, so it's good to see that the live site has been switched to a reliable one which is providing a far better service - one less thing for the IT lot to worry about tomorrow. The original ISP obviously has a big problem at it's end to resolve and I feel sorry for anyone using this 'service'. The strange thing about it is that the main site is running as normal - just downloaded the event program in <10 secs. Were the 2 world cup sites (main & live) hosted on different ISPs and this was what caused the problem?
btw, echo Stodgetta's sentiments: the show being put on in the arena is fantastic and the IT guys are playing a primary role in this with the limited resources they have.

Becks... you should grow up & stop being so defensive... as someone else said hope this isn't a sign of your BOF hat:)
One of the most important thing required for orienteering to grow into a worldwide acceptable sport is it's media appeal. This involves producing a quick, fast spectator opportunity for al those who are not able to be present on site.
WC had promised all this including live commentry etc etc. THEY HAVE FAILED TO DELIVER. A vast number of other competition manage to produce this without any obvious'up front' problems.
What goes on in the background isn't my concearn.. what I want as an 'armchair' viewer ir reliable & accurate information..... WC can either deliver or not deliver... after the hype they have left a lot of orienteers outside the SE dissapointed & no matter how good the racing, how good the weather, how good the big screen etc etc to those people the WC is a major flop as our only direct involvement is so disappointing.
So Becks - you grow up & consider that:)

Fairly much echo distracted's comments on the old server - good to see it has been replaced. The live site is working quickly now - thanks

It is not 'mud slinging' it is making very valid comments about the promised service not living up to the much hyped expectation. Sure, it does not seem to be the fault of the World Cup IT guys but who chose the service provider? Ignoring the lack of a live service the time it did take to access the page was a joke - was this tested in advance? If we, the viewers, are not to make any 'unwelcome' comments how is anyone to know that anything is wrong?? Should we be going down the line of doing the British thing and not complaining about anything?
I really hope the live site was not advertised too widely to media organisations - their view of orienteering will certainly have plummeted..... As Gross says - if we want to advertise our sport in the best light then things like this cannot be allowed to happen. Maybe it does come down to money but if sponsers are not coming forward then that shows the appeal of orienteering. We might have the ambition to show-off our sport but it does not seem that the rest of the country want to share it.

not mud-slinging at all here, just sad at not being able to join in more, whilst not being able to be there (because someone has to keep the NHS running over Bank Holiday weekends!)
But, if anyone from the IT team is reading this, I have to say that the link to the new URL isn't working here (not directly, or even if I click the redirection message). So I can see even less than for the last 3 days. This is despite refreshing pages etc etc.
Please can someone post up which URL I should be headed for?

thanks for link, but still doesn't work here. Says it's re-directing, but then takes me to the same old "dead" page. This despite Explorer settings as recommended on website, and can see message that it's transferred to JK server.
Never mind, obviosly fated not to be... got plenty else to do. Hope you all get to enjoy it today.

i think i speak on behalf of the majority of people by sayin how disappointed we are with the live coverge, its all just been a mess. i hope the people responsible feel ashamed. this is not portraying british orienteering in a good light. yet again i come on to look at info for the sprint and its not working... should of guessed it really.
