Two points.
1) my son has a version 3 brick and did a low key event last week and somehow didn't punch right at the start so his brick did not register any of his run. A lesson to learn!
2) with these bricks how do you know if they fail, can a battery fail mid event? Also are they tamper proof could someone change their clock to their advantage, are all the clocks synchronised and if so how do we know, in an event where seconds count could we be sure their is no drift between clocks on cards.

1) I have seen several examples of people not starting their cards. All that happens is that it starts at the first control - if they punched correctly.
2)Are they tamper proof? for God's sake. What do you think its like, a bomb on a film?
Batteries will fail when they run out. Fortunately they have about a 14year life or somthing, so you wont need to worry about that, we'll probably be on V4s by that time.
I pressume that the guys at emit thought about whether all the units were synchronised and that every brick kept the same time. But I dont know for sure. I doubt they have quartz in each one, but they could

Mharky when he downloaded he got nothing except his time from Hambledon. He almost certainly didn't place card in slot at every control and did not check displat at all but I'm certain he didn't fail to punch at 15 so the clock did not start at next control. Do you have to fix v 3's right in to start clock?

Being Devils Advocate here. Are they likely to be affected by mobile phones as I suspect people are more likely to have them around mobiles than the SI units are. These have I believe been shown to be affected and been adapted.I know nuffin about electronics etc so this could be pish, just curious.
By the way I don't own a brick cos I don't like carrying them so generally only do events where they are used if compelled.

I dont own a brick because I have already bought a SI Card
Which one is the Betamax?
When will we get a standard?

General Election
I have good news comrade. If you vote Communist Party at the general election then we shall ensure just one EPS. And it will be better because it shall be managed by the state.
The 'competition' propaganda put out by the other parties will never work. Join me in a Vodka my friend as we prepare for victory.

Sadly they are not standing here....
Got a choice of two Conservative Parties though.
Seriously, I would have thought that The Market would have killed off one of the systems by now. Perhaps its the free hire of EMIT that keeps it going.

i reckon that the hand's free system could really take off if all the glitches are ironed out.
i totally rated it in the sprints.
when used with a V3 card.

could well do. anyone know how much it costs?
one drawback is that the units are quite bulky... i think this is the main drawback with it at the moment: it's fine for areas like sandhurst, but could be off putting for organisers of big forest events.

How bulky are they? Surely not as bulky and troublesome as SI.
I never understood quite how SI became the norm over here, when EMIT was being used everywhere and for world champs races etc.
Brown envelope.......
SI requires putting controls out and then going around again the morning of the event to check they have woken up!!! As far as i am aware, with EMIT you just put them out.

True, but if you are only putting on small more informal events (as some clubs do, i.e. NGOC put on 8 mini colour coded events open to all - not just club), then these are often only put on by a couple of people. In these events it is not necessarily common practice to check all sites in the morning of the event.
This coupled with the pre-programming of SI means they are impractical (and waste of someones time) to be used on such small events. Wheras EMIT could be very easily used, no progamming? - i think.
I believe many competitors original argument against EMIT was the trickier use of the 'brick', surefly now with the hands free system with the visible feed back through the screen makes the sytem far better than SI both for competitors & planners / controllers etc.
Presumably in theory, the hands free system removes the inevitable problem of queueing to punch on first legs of relays!!?? Does anyone know how well it works when 5 or more people arrive at the same time and 'waft'

Ref comments about SI
Look at the new generation SI gear.
Needs no programing, battery problems gone...
smaller lighter etc etc.

had a discussion about this with someone - it came down to whether EMIT controls record the card numbers like SI does, or whether it's just the control number that needs to be written to the card. If the latter then there shouldn't be a problem as it should just be a case of the card picking up the radio signal and in theory any number of runners could register. Don't know about in practice though...
