When are these compulsary and when are they not?
At BUSA a few people cut through the tapes on the spectator run through and cut across the carpark to the control. Although this may have only saved them 5-10 seconds max, it was still an advantage.
At BUSA there was nothing on the descriptions and no dashed line on the map, just tapes actaully there. I guess then the ograniser should have stipulated what you should do.
At BEOC middle today someone in the top 10 cut across the first corner (where you entered the side of the range) by ducking under the tapes. On the map the route was drawn out pretty much exactly as it was taped by the dashed line. So should this person be DSQ for gaining an unfair advantage?

At JK day 1 there was a horshoe shaped taped run-in from the final control to the finish. I suspect you would have been disqualified if you had just cut straight across to the finish?

BOF Rules wrote:7.2.13 Competitors shall follow in its entirety any compulsory route, including that leading from the start or to the finish of the course.
That seems to suggest that it depends on how the course is drawn on the map and the control descriptions. If it says (or is the equivalent in pictures): 'Follow taped route' then you must follow the tapes.

You clearly have to follow the taped route if the descriptions have the 'follow taped route' symbol.
At the JK relays for exmaple you could have gained a large advantage by going from the last control straight to the changeover pen, ducking under a few tapes on the way (rather than round the long loop). But no-one would have considered doing that surely with everyone watching.
So the same should apply in all taped finish routes (although yesterday's one did have a few nasty 90 degree bends in it!)

I heard a rumour that someone actually did do it at the JK and got disqualified for doing it.
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

I suspect in answer to your question Mark yes they prob should be dsq'd (without seeing map, control desc or them do it). It does raise a further question however of when does the planner expectation of people not cheating go too far. In an ideal world we're all told to do something and rules are rules, but in that case why do we need referees in football?
I've certainly been to races where it would've saved loads of time to do something "illegal" - of course I never did - and got frustrated being passed by people doing it. If the course had been planned so there was no advantage to go in the OOB/cut tapes etc then the opportunity for cheating wouldn't be there.

mark that would be mine, the planners and the controllers fault for all not spotting that the route to the spectator control would be right through the car park, we just decided the day before to tape route round the car park for safety, so i guess in this case it was more an 'advised route'

Tapes to Finish at JK Day1
Interesting. At JK day 1 I watched somebody take the short cut They weren't disqualified. Looking at the splits their time is so much quicker than the rest. The map shows a direct line between the last control and the finish but the control description is 'Follow Taped Route' so anybody who didn't go round should have been disqualified - but there wasn't anyboby manning the finish

If someone was DQ'd in this circumstance, I would say they had a good right to protest, as the line on the map went straight. If the taped route was a loop around an "OOB" area, then the line should have shown a loop, or the area been marked as OOB.
In the event of unclear or conflicting instructions, who is to say which is right? Which takes precedence, the markings on the map, or instructions in the control descriptions?
