Being a prospective student at Edinburgh next year I am a bit concerned as to where I'll be living this coming September. I have found no useful information from the University about the various flats/houses available, yet they want me to make a choice of 4 places I would prefer within the next few weeks.
I'm quite worried about ending up in a dingy l'il hole (well I expect some studenty dinyness!) due to lack of information.
Pleading to Edinburgh people to recommend some of the better self-catering abodes. Much appreciated.

I want to walk up the side of the mountain, I want to walk down the other side of the mountain. I want to swim in the river, lie in the sun. I want to try being nice to everyone.

they are all pretty good as far as I know, darroch court is one of the nicer ones and right next to the gym, I live in south clerk street which is in a very convenient location, and confused lives in east newington place so he could give you an insight on that.

Pollock is great for meeting LOADS of people, but you are restricted to meal times, and i think you pay for all meals up front to if you miss them its tough.
I lived in south clerk st, nice enough, rooms are an ok size, and you get the freedom of cooking when you want, but you won't get to meet quite as many people. its very close to the meadows for training, ands arthurs seat too, there is a good biek shop over the road, and a lovely, if somewhat expensive deli opposite the place now too
Darrocch ct is nice, and as said right next to the gym, si thats handy, not so good if you are going to be at KB but great if you do geography.
sure some other folk will put down their views too.
but don't listen to sheffield, they smell and Edinburgh is ace

im going to annoy lots of people here
pollock is full of rich kids. and they tell you when to eat.
darroch court is full of rich kids "slumming it"
clerk st is apparently pretty good.
sciennes (pronounced sheens) is the place to be. also near to uni, the seat, meadows, buses to anywhere etc but als is full of "real" people and has a viccy wine at the bottom of the road. self catering flats of 4/5, big enough to not be horrible but small enough to let you get to know everyone a wee bit. great parties. then hope you get number 24, the disbaled flat. i got put in there and it was ace.
theres one on the cowgate that i forget the name of that is apprently really horrible to live in. has black in its name i think.
there is one down near kings buildings which might be good if thats the campus you are going to be at, but its scummy and miles out of town.

warrender park road, barring the odd mouse, was class. awesomely quiet on sunday mornings. a trot down the links to the meadows.
as samsonite mentioned, sciennes did, in fact, have AWESOME parties.

One of them is Robertson's Close - I was there 9 years ago and it was showing its age then.....Blocks of self-catering flats of 5 or 6 people. Close to Cowgate for going out (can therefore be noisy), close to the gym and pretty close to George Square stuff.

In Europe for 3 weeks, but Vienna for a conference for a week. going to be a pretty hectic/rushed trip. Still wondering about trying to get to Edinburgh - but probably won't make it. Looking forward to the British except I've only run twice in the last 3-4 weeks.
Printing out my thesis now (yep 3am here). Take it to the binders tomorrow, hand it in Friday, no more a student.

Cheers for the helpful info people.
I'm giving Pollock a miss simply because of the scheduled mealtimes and expense.
Am disappointed to hear that Sciennes is pronounced "Sheens"- thinking it could be quite appropriate since I'm going to be studying science and all.
I've already replied to Ucas (Sheffield is my insurance!)

don't listen to samsonite, I was in Darroch Court for my first year and it wasn't full of rich snobs.
tis the best of the self catering and still has alot of banter. Plus its next to pleasants sport centre and it also it has a washing machine in each flat which is a big bonus if your an orienteer.

I live in Pollock and it's pretty good. There is advantages and disadvantages either way of flat vs. Pollock, but people have already mentioned them. If you're going for a flat, fair enough. I've been in a few and not seen any scummy ones. Out of Newington, South Clerk Street, New Arthur Place, Hermits Croft, and Darroch Court, I'd say Darroch court is the nicest, really big, nice flats, and I know plenty of sound people there! The other ones I would say are all very similar and all fine.

East Newington Place, it's fairly close to everywhere, if u live in some of the flats its a haul to Kings Buildings everyday, especially if your doing science.
It's not the accomodation you want to worry about, it's who you live with.
Also, if you fancy a pollock meal on the house, East Newington Place is a mere stone throw away.
And also, it's on the same block as NOPE HQ.
And.. It's next to a grave yard, ideal for snowman making banter.
And..... it's up a dead end, which has a funeral directors based on it, with a real life morgue type thing, but they only do deliveries during the day thankfuly.
