JK Day 2
I'd just like to say well done to the planners of day 2 of the JK for providing a very enjoyable course. Almost entirely in white, runnable forest and a pleasure to run - what orienteering should be. I'd been dreading controls in the young green plantations and being forced to do lots of track running.

Day 2 M21E - this was a reminder why I got into orienteering in the first place. I can't remember a course I enjoyed more. It was quite delightful.
Obligatory, if churlish, criticism: shouldn't elite courses have at least one leg longer than 6.5 mins for the winner?

Not for the sake of having a long leg no.

Can't truly speak for M21E although I did see the course, and the first "half" was virutally the same as M21L. When I looked ahead to the rest of the course en route to 3 I was initially disappointed with most of the leg lengths being the same, but actually doing it I felt that the variety of terrain meant that it never felt like they were all the same.

Fair point. So here's a challenge - can you plan a good long leg on that area?

I think it's possible to plan a decent long "route choice" leg but I don't think it would be possible to plan a long leg which had an interesting execution (i.e. wasn't just a slog around a choice of paths) on this area - something often overlooked when planning courses.

I'd also like to congratulate Dave Gittus (mapper/planner) and Marlene Palmer (organiser) on their excellent Trail-O event at Shugborough on Day 2.
An accurate map and testing planning by Dave which whilst it was so devious that nobody got all the controls right (The winner, Brian Parker got 14 out of 15), was fair enough for there to be no complaints afterwards, a rare thing in Elite Trail-O.
The results have now appeared on the website, but seem to have been garbled in translation. I hope that Stodge can sort them out.

It's been years since I enjoyed a course as much as I did Day 2 of the JK. Was really pleased not to see a long leg that was an interesting route choice to make but involving 10 or so mins or boring track running to execute. We were kept on our toes through fantastic woodland - cheers guys!
Will? We've got proper fire now!

I agree. It was soooo lovely that I spent a full 2 hours enjoying it. It even had an East Anglian control (the depression in the runnable one direction forest) to make me feel at home.
Maybe...

Speaking with Kitch afterwards about slogging round tracks...
He said that with Peel & Palmer he tested a lot of legs across Sherbrook, and that pretty much every leg is best run straight, except to avoid green.
Its almost never worth going round to avoid climb and stay on the tracks. When I saw the kind of legs he was talking about, I was really surprised (i.e. I'd have been straight out on the track): but he should know. Looking at my own splits seems to bear that out (and usually I'm much better on tracks than terrain).
So staying in the woods is not just nicer, its faster too!

Look out for more of the same at a Chasers badge event next March (19th I think) on the same area, with a SPLOT 25th anniversary short race on the Saturday (on the Chase so no long drive, Fatboy planning and hopefully all the controls in the right place ).
Maybe I'll get to finish the course next year

Am i missing something - why all these veiled digs at the HOC day - I thought this was a whole regional event and we were all in together - I didn't realise we were in competition - is there something I don't know about
