Well said Guest
Although I have never been to BUSA and never will the more unis(I.E. students) that take part and enjoy it the better for the sport.
As said before I'd like to see established orienteers spreading their wings and not making a bee line for EUOC or SHUOC. It's great to see OUOC giving a good performance and beginning to break the mould.

hats off to shuoc, solid performances were always going to beat us, we just made it a bit easier for you!
im also well impressed by the oxford team... think we might have to recruit some of that team for next year
and thankyou very much to warwick for a very smoothly organised weekend, everything went as well as could be hoped for, and was all highly enjoyable... just as well given my performances!

Like Guest I have never been to busa and never will. Reading the threads on nope it appears to be a great competition enjoyed by all. I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to answer a few questions for me?
It would appear that Sheffield won this year, are the other universities ranked?
Do the B course competitors contribute to the competition in anyway other than making up the numbers, do they gain points for their universities?

they should be and i'm sure the results will be churned out eventually.

nope, just make up the numbers, but if they were to be counted how would you decide who should be eligable to run them?
It would be quite good if there was some way to have counters on the other courses but would be difficult to create a system so you don't get people just running down a class. Like me at least if it had counted for something then my subsequent death would have worthwhile at least, although I did get a bottle of Black Sheep for it, though whether I ever see it again is another matter

BUSA points are awarded as follows
Men's A / Women's A / Men's Relay / Women's Relay
1st - 3 points
2nd - 2 points
3rd - 1 point
Plus points for the overall championship
1st - 10 points
2nd - 7 points
3rd - 5 points
Meaning
ShUOC - 25 points
OUOC - 10 points
EUOC - 7 points
Leeds Met - 3 points
UWOC - 1 point
Though these are just my rough working out and could be completely wrong

fraid thats not how it works, its done as follows (as was bashed together on nopesport over a year ago and approved by busa, see here):
busa orienteering scoring rules wrote:The Championships consist of Individual and Relay Championships for both men and women.
There is also an overall Team Championship.
ORI 1.1 Each relay team shall consist of three competitors.
ORI 1.2 The overall team score shall be calculated for each university by the following system
ORI 1.3 Adding the placings of the three best men and women s individual competitors to the placings (multiplied by three) of its placed men and women s relay teams.
ORI 1.4 Every missing runner is treated as though they finished one place behind the last finisher.
ORI 1.5 If a university has no place in a relay competition, it is deemed to have finished one place behind the last placed team.
ORI 1.6 The university with the lowest aggregate score is awarded the overall team championship.

What you've put is how the points for the overall championship are worked out, and like i wrote there are 10 points for 1st place, 7 for second and 5 for third.
I could be wrong about the individual / relay points but based on what BUSA have down for Orienteering i'm sure that there are points for those as well -

Indeed look at what you wrote:
Hence points for Individual, Relay AND the Team Championship. So i'd say i'm right, and i'll wager a good 50p on it.

Ooh I hope I'm the first in a barrage of abuse at you Jay. You're wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. Wrong.
Nope and Dave Rosen made up the scoring system, so I think they'd know. The overall score is just the sum of the individual and relay competitions. Not rocket science.
It's lovely that you've looked up how the points count towards the BUSA overall competition (i.e. all sports added together to find the best university at sport).
Can I have 50p please?

OK i fully admit that i am confused, (and probably wrong and will be more than happy to pay my wager if someone can explain to me exactly where i've gone wrong)
I wrote out how the BUSA points are given out, not the sum of the scores that were used to determine the team championship (i'm guessing GG has those as he must have worked them out before prize giving).
I was basing my assumption that ShUOC had come first (as that is what GG had stated yesterday at prizegiving), so said that they will get 10 BUSA points.
So was i right to say that Sheffield will get 10 BUSA points for winning the Overall Championship or not?
I was trying to 'point' out which universities will get points towards the overall (all sports) BUSA championship. Sorry for any confusion with overall 'scores', my original post could have been a little clearer in that respect.

While we're on the subject of BUSA points, the overall BUSA rankings were updated this week.
You may all be interested to see where your Uni ranks to date at http://www.busa.org.uk/page.asp?section ... 0200010003
A wee bit off topic, but interesting, and may help those who are confused between which of the two systems is at issue here:
(1) the system used to decide who won the Overall title at the BUSA Orienteering Championships (as Brooner "Pothunter" Brown described above); or,
(2) the (very different) system used to decide that Loughborough are the best University at Sport in Britain - a system which takes in account all the Sport between University teams/clubs over the academic year (though May to May (-ish) in effect). Jay is right, I believe, in suggesting that points will be allocated to the appropriate institutions' totals for (a) Overall; (b) Individual; and, (c) Relay results in this case.
Hope it helps.
