i've heard that SYO won the mens relays, but then I also heard that Scotia was seen celebrating, so could go either way on that report...
i'll have to get my parents to pay more attention in future

Was it right to disq those who failed to punch their map at the failed first control. I don't think it said anything about there being punches out for the relay in the programme. There was only one control and presumably lots of runners descending on it despite the gaffle. Our first leg runner was a little disappointed although our team were not competing for prizes they were competing for the experience.

I agree those not punched first control shouldn't have been disqd. Yes by the rules it's the competitor's responsibilty blah blah but you have to remember this is control 1 of leg 1 in a relay.
I was fortunate to get there about 5 seconds after the leader and it wasn't too much carnage to get the map punched. Carnage ensued in the download tent with the queue of people with their maps to be checked.
One of the SPLOT teams was disqd and the runner in question couldn't find the punch because by that stage (toward the back of leg 1) the stake was over and the punch presumably was punch side down in the mud.
The other point to make is that the unit was replaced later in the race meaning the time (ok small time) lost by first leg runners on that gaffle wasn't experienced by those teams not having it on the 3rd. This also goes for disqualifying the teams - those teams with the other first control on their first leg didn't experience this potential disqualification area.

JK Relay Programme wrote:Relay Day - All Competitors
On the Relay Day there are back up punches on all the control stakes which must be used by ALL competitors if the unit has failed. Punch anywhere on your map.
Seems pretty clear to me - definitely not grounds for a protest......!!
Why did I do that...

Yes, it was right, because thats what the rule says you have to do, and it wasn't overridden in the programme. Reinstatement would be unfair to those who lost time trying to punch their map.
It does indicate, of course, why its a bad rule... but thats another issue.
Regarding experience - I don't really see how the experience of running in a relay is affected by a disqualification happening long after you've finished running.
As with the M21E day 1 - an unpleasant decision to have to make, and all credit to the organisers for getting it right.
Meanwhile... On the day the Chasers chose to remind us that juniors once believed they could compete in and win these big races, wasn't it great to see a junior coming in to win the JK trophy again!
Well done EUOC!

True but see my comment about replacing the unit later - unfair on me for punching the map (and queuing to do so) then all the 3rd leg teams at that unit not having to.

Agreed. Also better to get the boxes working in the first place!

I agree sort of. Our little 5 team race within the men's short - we know we all went to the controls and the "result" will stand with us. The annoying thing though is you come out of the download tent knowing you've been disqd for finishing the course!
Another question then. Why was there only one unit at the first control anyway?
A personal point from this JK - I did 3 races (MTBO, Day 2 and Relay) and all three splits print-outs say DISQ when I completed all courses, and indeed I was re-instatated in all. Isn't it about time we got this electronic thing right?

I think that it may have been a good idea to have two units out at several of the controls as many of the short leg runners went out at a similar time and had shared controls resulting in (short) queues to punch at several controls in the forest. This wouldn't have ben a problem in anything but a relay, however it could be bourne in mind for future events.
I had a great run though and the atmosphere was fantastic!
