We have a POC that we produced the map for and usually sell it through the Forestry Commission to punters. The local Friends of the Forest have some lottery funding and in conjunction with the FC, wish to produce an education pack for teachers, which will be a CD and will include the POC map for the teachers to print off unlimited copies.
What's the copyright position of them being able to print unlimited copies? We don't think that they is an issue, since in buying the CD, they are buying that right to print them, but is there any thing else we should be consdiering?

Is copyright of the map with the club? If the club is the copyright holder then you can agree to whatever you want in relation to the copying - in effect you can licence the people who buy the CD to print off unlimited copies.
If the copyright is with someone else (the mapper or the printer maybe) then the club is not in a position to grant the licence - the copyright holder must agree.
*NB this is just my opinion based on 12 weeks of IP law, don't take it as gospel!*

Thanks El, that was my thoughts were - the map says it's the club's copyright so I think we'll be okay.

For future reference I'm posting the answer from BOF.
Alex Ross in an e-amil to me wrote:The OS will certainly expect a royalty from every map printed if any OS Data was used in its production. If the map is registered with BOF then those paper copies printed by the club will be covered by the BOF License.
However the use of media other than hard copy is not covered by our license. Schools may be able to print under their own OS License (and pay their own royalties) but their license number (and not BOFs)would then have to be included on the printed map. I would suggest that you take up your proposal with OS directly.
I suspect that you may require a Publishing Licence which is administered by the Customer Contact Centre (Copyright) Telephone 08456 05 05 05. More detailed information and requisite documentation can be found on their website at http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsi ... shing.html
