how about they just navigate to the feature; can't they see a flag from a few metres away???
blue/yellow is straannge, from a distance (not that we are looking for the flags, just the features) it could appear to look green, like a forest.
why dont we have black flags so it hard for everyone???

At Lagganlia a few years ago Heather Burrows had a set of Blue/white mini flags and a Green/yellow set. These were used for Welsh Squad training I think. We used them as both Lagganlia and Glenmore tours were having to use the same forest on the same day. Don't know if any of those on tour remember them?

Sounds good to me. However there's always going to be controls given away by other competitors going in accurately so it's only an answer to colour blindness not to the more general problem of making everyone have to navigate right up to the control.
I dragged 3 "runners" around on Saturday to no doubt have the best runs of their life without having to find too many controls for themselves. How do we solve that? Pass.

Topic looked interesting but haven't read it all so this point may have been made before. I am actually red/green colour blind and have in the past had trouble at several competitions with control circles and lines disappearing in areas of forest fight or even through marshes. (Particularly one british champs about 8 years ago)
Aparently BOF does have strict guidelines on the colours used to minimize this problem however, it is evident that they are not always stuck to. There are also ways around it by wearing different coloured contact lenses. I came to the conclussion that I had reached a level I was happy competing at without any 'benefits' so just tend to put up with it, the problem has decresed in recent years due to standardised overprinting.
I also bring up the point of scale though. if you are going to start faffing with colourblindness, are you also going to give people who wear glasses a larger scale map? In the end it all comes down to what your happy with. Optitions I have spoken to have told me that the colours used on o'maps are actually the worst possible combinations for my type of colourblindness, but in the end the sport is a challenge and this is just another obsticle.

And those of us who are long sighted a smaller scale (1:15000 always please). As you say you can't please everybody but standards should be standards both on scale and colour so we can all get used to them.
Either the colours at Pembrey were better or I'm getting better. I actually navigated past a pond without expecting to see a bush!

colour blindness
I've just had a look at the sprint legend on the surrey-5-o website. Is it just me, or is 'area with forbidden access' denoted by some shade of green? I can't see a difference between it and 'Vegetation: very difficult to run' while I sit here and peer at the screen. What hope will I have when I'm trying to run at the same time?

Yes - it is a shade of green - 'olive green' I think it's called. It's the same colour as is used on standard O maps for residential - Out Of Bounds - which is the situation it should be used in here. So you can probably pick it out by the fact there are buildings enclosed within it.

The 'area with forbidden access' should be an olive green and is found on other maps. Have a look at some o-maps that have some residential area covered (such as the Blackheath map here) and see if the colours stand out enough. On the ground it should be fairly clear you are about to go OOB, as it generally represents people's gardens, etc.
