Event to results-on-the-web time
How long do clubs usually take to get results on the web? I don't want to name names, but the East Anglian events I have run seem to go up very quickly, often within 24 hrs, while the results for 2 events I've run in another region are still not up, 6 weeks in one case, 4 days so far in the other. Not sure if there is any correlation between the system used and timescales - punching is naturally slower, but any intrinsic difference between dibbers and EMIT? I think it is helpful to be able to tell participants whe they can expect to see their results on the web. The event in January was the first orienteering event ever attended by my neices (aged 4 & 6 years) and the one 4 days ago was my Mum's first ever ever event, so I would like them to see their results on the web, as all are web-literate.

not usually any problems at all here in central scotland, SIman usually has the results up ASAP, often before you even get home!
Anyone else miss the old days and the anxious wait for the postie and orienteering results when you had to leave an event before everyone had finished?
It always really impressed me back then when results would be on the doorstep within a couple of days, especially ones which had been done on a typewriter! So for results still to be unavailable 6 weeks after the event seems pretty incredible. Mind you having said that, has anyone seen the results from the AROS Elite Test relays?

I've found that results tend to be slower with emit.
Having said that it depends on who is doing the on the day stuff with SI, it is straight forward to upload to the web but you have to get the web site links etc and understand that, often I think files are passed around clubs a bit.

If Im doing SI for WCH and Ive got mobile phone coverage I upload the results two or three times during the event and post provisional results before I packup and go home.
The splits are heavy files to upoad over mobile so I normally do that at home by about 3pm.
I then go through the disqs to make sure no issues are outstanding and then repost final results by about 4pm.
I dont really see any excuse for them not being on the web in some form by about 6 - 7pm at the latest allowing for long drives home.

I think a lot of the delays you see aren't to do with the software being used but quite often because the person running the download isn't the webmaster. Still not an excuse though!

Hmmm...is it the emit or is it the organiser
And btw is Scotland's win at the SHI confirmed if there are no official results yet
Why did I do that...

By and large results for events are posted promptly on the BOF site. On Sunday afternoon/early evening when I log on to upload results there are several events already listed. No, the system works well in my experience.
The only gripe I have is with clubs who post the results on their own website and don't complete a link from the BOF results page.

BOF have guidelines on the matter - for District events results should be published within 2 weeks (with no suggestion as to how). For regional events and above preliminary results are expected to be on the net with a link from the BOF website on the evening of the event. The guidelines seem quite reasonable but I suspect that for a lot of clubs there is a hold up in getting the results from the organising team to the website administrator.
Is there a case for BOF hosting all results? I don't know if this is realistic (not being web literate myself), but if the results could be published by submitting a file to the BOF website with simple instructions then it cuts out the need for a middle man. Also this would help cut the problem of disappearing results and missing links.

The Swiss federation does this. Very useful when looking for results from a few years ago on the JWOC areas.
One problem with the BOF results page is that you need to know the password. I imagine that the majority of English orienteers haven't got a clue what it is and just give up.

Wouldn't be difficult either. Of course you'd need a standard format for the results to be in. Of course there is...

I've often thought one thing BOF could do to help clubs is actually host all their websites for them and offer some standard functions such as taking entry payments etc. Easy way to collect participation info!
