British Night Champs
I like night orienteering and have done the British Night Champs a couple of times. This year because my husband is away I though about taking my son whi is a pretty useful first year M16 (althout still only 14 years old) I would not see him on a course during the day but he has yet to outpoint me on a 1 hour night score. given that BOF don't like under 14 night orienteering solo for insurance purposes - how is it he would have to run further than the M35s at the night champs - given how few night events there are, where was he meant to get the experience from?

this always seemed wierd to me: iv been night o'ing since i was 10, the tinto twin used to have a M14B course at night, which was paired with M10A during the day.
since night o is pretty limited in britain theres no easy answer - one thing iv noticed is that while there are many styles of orienteering which can be used during the day, very few of these are effective at night. so soem people who are good during the day are hopeless with a torch on their heads, whilst others make the transition easily.

What you need to do is organise an informal training course. Use parks near home to begin with, then go to more technical areas. Plan a small course, or use and old course (from the mountain of maps that you no doubt have stored away somewhere). 3km or so lots of controls. I you can get other club members involved then all the better. Go and hang bog roll that will decompose....so you don't have to collect them in. (takes half an hour to plan then an hour to set out) If interest from half a dozen people, then you can take it in turns each week to plan/set out controls. In the winter this is great for keeping your navigation in trim. As employed in sheffield since late september last year.
