O-Ringen 2005
Is it just me or does 85 Euros seem a bit steep for 5 days orienteering!!!???
Thats about £59 quid....more than a tenner a race!??
Surely they can't be serious...(or maybe i've got it wrong!)
Anyone got any other suggestions for European Events this summer? Maybe ones which don't wreck my wallet?
O-Ringen Expensive!

Oringen is top. a tenner a day is worth it.
events in sweden are expensive but how many events in britain have warm showers in every field, big arenas etc? you've been to oringen so you know it makes sense.
but.. other multi days i've been to that have been brilliant fun. Czech 5 days (an absolute must i've been twice, the first one, in 1999 was one of the best weeks of my life ever) Italian 5 days 2002 was also pretty great. French 5 days comes highly recommended. Any in eastern Europe like czech 5 are a must tho. Do it. Do it.

don't forget the fact that the views are great, especially in the finish field if the weather is good, worth it alone

Czech does indeed sound very good, and we (OUOC) would have gone, but unfortunately this year it clashes with the Scottish 6-days which is pretty annoying...

The link for the Czech 5 this year is http://ok-bor.cz/bohemia/, and it is 3rd-7th August.
I would be going if it wasn't for the fact that it unfortunantely clashes with the Scottish. I've been to it in 1999-2003, and would certainly recommend it (though I might be a bit biassed...)

Are entry fees of £59 really a lot if you compare them with the total price of flights and a week's living costs in Sweden?

It's only expensive because you've been caught on the shoulder rate that the Swedes have for 17-20 year olds (presumably given the price you quote). For 16- and 21+ it's not so bad, very similar to the British and JK especially if one allows for the fact that the £ is a bit weak at present.
Actually, when you start factoring in transport etc., the cost per race of the O-ringen looks on first glance to compare quite favourably with the British (at least from this part of the world).
I think you'll also find that entries are paid by clubs in Sweden, so you know what you need to do if you want cheaper entries.....!

The cost for the O-Ringen this year is more because there is less sponsor money available. Last years' event only made a profit because of the relatively large amount of sponsorship money that goes with organising an event in a city. So the cash has to come from entry fees, parking etc.

You know I have reply to that ... and agree for once. Factor in the cost of petrol to just about anywhere in the UK and flying out of a local airport is going to be cheaper.
£59 is a bargain for the standard of terrain you get at the o-ringen. Compare the entry to the other costs for the week e.g. transport, kit damage, beer and it doesn't really matter if it's 59 or 39.

The Italian 5-day is pretty cheap, it's bound to be hot, and the terrain looks good too.
60 Euros for 5 days, though you do have to add 20 Euros for compulsory bus transport to each event.
