I think there's two issues here:
1 is attracting kids into the sport in the first place.
2 is training them up to succeed internationally.
These are very different things.
The kids from UVHS may well come back to orienteering later in life (when they have more money!)
I agree with gg for voting for the Marsdens - they've coached more Lagganlias than I've had hot dinners, are integral to the Start Squad and run SEJS (makes me knackered just thinking about it).
The Marsdens succeed in producing international athletes, spotting them from grass roots. But if the likes of Clare Evans don't bring them in to start with...
the most influential people in British O at the moment

If we want more exposure and publicity for the sport isn't it a good idea to give more trophies not take them away. Ref they're taking the trohies away ha! ha! .Coz people who win trophies can get press coverage and if they link it to an event ie CATI/SMILE then people who read it come along. We've tried it several times and there is always some one who turns up coz they,ve seen the picture and read the article.
Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

Publicity
Yeah
O gets pretty good publicity here in stafford as chasers reguralrly put articles in the papers. and whenever sum1 gets picked for start tour /england they get an article in. More could be done in reagrds to publicity in the schools cos im sure there are a lot of crocc country runners out there who need a change! My school 9although not int stafford) is getting goin with a few lads in my year joining in but i can see that it never will be that big cos they wouldnt want it to interfere with the sacred rugby.
but if everyone got a few people into it from theyre schools then it would be much more popular overall!!
