Warning to controllers
Last weekend I took part at an event where part maps were used for different courses. My course the light green had crucial route choice bits cut off. It made one leg into a Green unless you gambled on the path network off the map. I queried this with the controller. He showed me the map he was working from. Of course route choice elements on his. He apologised, saying printing done late on, however this might have been a major problem for youngsters moving up from Orange, particularly as the event had an associated schools league. The overprinted maps need to be checked, whatever level the event.
Diets and fitness are no good if you can't read the map.

For our event I planned at the weekend we had overprinted maps. I used crops of the full map. White to Green went on A4 and Blue and Brown were on A3. Controller was very thorough and checked the Condes files before they went to the printer and the printed maps afterwards. Stirling Surveys service was excellent. Sent the files on Tuesday lunchtime and 285 maps were ready by the next afternoon.
Yes, I am alright.

...and absolutely marvellous it was too Mr.180 .
maybe I'm unusual with my dicky knees, but lying on the wet grass in the p*ssing rain trying to get a pen to work just doesn't get me in the right frame of mind to go orienteering.
Meanwhile, back somewhere near the thread, you really aren't allowed off the map to gamble on the path network, though I do remember on area with a blue line around it and "unsurveyed - cross at your own risk" written across one large area. I crossed.

I also remember a score event one New Year's Day somewhere just south of Manchester (Tatton Park?), where the quickest way to get them all was to try and run off the map and round the lake to the south.
Despite the unexpected very deep stream to cross (above head height deep) it worked for some people, not least as a hangover cure (!)- others tried it, gave in for fear of drowning, and went back the other way.
I was far too timid even to try it - most people who beat me took the 'off the map' route

Why did I do that...
