Hello,
I'm a bit new to this Orienteering (8 goes so far) so this may be a silly question, but I get small thorns in my toes after a run through brambles.
Now I've no idea how tromping through brambles deposits thorns in my shoes or how they manage to point in the right direction to stick into my toes. But every time I get home and my girlfriend has to pluck several, admittedly small (about 2 mm long) but definitely there, thorns out.
Perhaps I'm being a bit of a wuss, but it certainly disrupts my concentration (and makes me run very strangely, they always stick into the pad of the big toes).
So
1. is this normal,
and
2. do orienteering shoes have any special thorn deflecting technology
(I run in ordinary trainers and leggings, and its definitely new thorns coming in each time if this makes any difference)
Any advice gratefully received (even if it is along the lines of "stop being a wuss")
Cheers Jon.

I think "stop being a wuss" is the call. everyone gets them, everyone deals with them. Or maybe you could put a sheet of lead in front of your toes when you run...
The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.

I think you will find that proper orienteering shoes will improve matters - and in any case, if you're keen to carry on, you should be thinking about getting some - because you are going to wreck your trainers and you will get better grip

If you are going to continue get some O shoes or risk regular sprained ankles through lack of grip on uneven surfaces. Sorry but thorns can penetrate through these as well.
Enjoy the thorns, its the b*ll*ck high nettles in May/June that you really need to worry about.

Try the 4 metre specimens in Great Breach Wood in Somerset......
Had a couple of events there long ago .. There was no access off paths , none at all (save one wee block with a tame reentrant).. And the paths were brambly....

I've never had thorn problems with my Olway O-shoes. Possibly because I have quite a lot of space between my toes and the end of the shoe?

definitely get some o'shoes;
I once got a thorn in my foot when running in trainers.
It was a hawthorn through the sole, I had to completely un-lace the shoe in order to un-pin my foot.
Bilbo on the otherhand does not need thorns, he just get sticks right through the soles of his o'shoes and into his foot, when he isn't cutting his own toes off that is.

I've never really had problems with thorns in my toes. Generally I get them in my ankles when the brambles get wrapped around them and I end up dragging as I run. Also I used to find quite a few in my knees which is odd.

I'm eventually free of thorns after an event last Sunday, they were all over my legs...and 2 on my feet. Obviously don't have the best shoes (or the best route choices maybe).
Well I wont be wearing a skirt on Valentines weekend.

I want to walk up the side of the mountain, I want to walk down the other side of the mountain. I want to swim in the river, lie in the sun. I want to try being nice to everyone.
