This is old news. I think theres a cambridge company developing an ink which you can put in an inkjet printer and print your own screens. The best thing is that they require no power to hold a picture, only to change it so battery life wouldn't be a problem. However, the last time something like this came up on /. it was pointed out that a map with a bullet hole in it is still a map. An electronic display with a bullet hole in it is a waste of space.

Peter, if per say you happen to be running through the forest one fine Saturday afternoon when up pops Michael Jackson and Martin Basheer who have traded in their placentae guns for AKs and just fancy blatting off a few rounds from their Kalashnikovs in your general direction hitting your new rollable screen map with a bullet then I think you'd still be OK and able to navigate your way out of the hostile situation because
Electronic ink uses black and white particles with opposite charge encapsulated in micro-capsules. The particles move under the influence of an electric field. Once the power is switched off, the particles stick to a display and become stable, making it ideal for mobile uses that require low-power consumption.
which I read to say that once power is off then each "stable" particle is independent of each other and therefore is effectivley the same as an ink printed map, I may however be way off the mark and you might have a waste of space in your hands as you run frantically away from Jako and Martae, but I'm sure the boffins will come up with something even better soon enough![/quote]
You can't expect to reach the top without a little climbing!
