Argos - Orienteering
Looking thru my Autumn/Winter copy of the Argos Extra catalogue I finally reached page 1100. The page is headed Orienteering (excellent!) BUT Argos are advertising GPS devices with the cheapest at £129.99...So little Johnny/Janey asks Santa that he/she want to start orienteering cos it looks cool...Mummy and Daddy (who know nothing about 'O') automatically turn to the Argos catalogue, like all good parents and see the price tag of > £120.00...Little Jonny/Janey are going to be disappointed ...they will not be starting this expensive sport ooh look there is a fishing rod on page 1103 for £14.99 they can take up fishing instead...Strangely enough item 8 on page 1100 is described as an Orienteeting compass priced at £4.99...Where does Argos get its' info from. It's worth looking at the page and take 2 mins to think what image this page is giving our sport as under the heading of Orienteeering is the sub heading "Accessories - all the essential bits and pieces to ensure a great trip!" advertising a nice waterproof poncho and a tent tidy (to put your muddy shoes in?) and not forgetting a Piknik Blanket.....It's all about IMAGE.

Ha ha ha - could it be the Field and Trek connection back to haunt us? interestingly Orienteering is mentioned in the index of the new Guinness book of Records - but on closer inspection the only entry is some obscure ski-orienteering relay.
saw Celebrity fat Farm last night they showed anne widdecombe standing next to an orienteering kite - another great ambassador for the sport
Harry - you're confusining me - why this name change?

But in the old ones (mid-70s) they have pictures of Carol McNeil and other people who now run M50/60/70something!Mrs H. wrote:Orienteering is mentioned in the index of the new Guinness book of Records?
I saw that too. Maybe I should try and get local boy Andy Fordham (30 stone 8lbs) to our next CATI so I won't be the fattest bloke thereMrs H. wrote:saw Celebrity fat Farm last night they showed anne widdecombe standing next to an orienteering kite - another great ambassador for the sport

Go for it Porky - there's a lot of untapped mileage in celebrity orienteering. I was very impressed with Christine Hamilton in the first series of I'm a Celebrity. she and tony blacklburn got given a map and she said:"this is orientering - i've done it before - marches off purposefully to find the check points and ends up with a crate of fags and booze - i've never been that lucky I suggested to robin field we should get her along to present the prizes at the British as she is such an excellent self-publicist - he was not amused. i thought she'd be a lot mor fun than the usual boring so and sos. Mind you, at BOC in 2000 the Mayor of Hereford patted me on the bottom
Oh dear! you now know I watch I'm a celebrity and Celebrity Fat Club
