I noticed a thread on the Junior forum about Universities. I would just like to say that just because you are an orienteer don't think you have to go to Sheffield or Edinburgh.
LEEDS is a great University especially for some courses like Art, Maths, Medicine and Biomedical Sciences
It's huge and popular and has one of the richest Unions in the country.
Because the Union is so rich the Sports Budget is big and if you work out the system you can end up getting virtually ALL your orienteering activities paid for by the Sports Office.
Plus bursaries for internationals of £750 a year EACH - yes that's right, this is on top of the funding I mentioned above which is club funding.
Also if you take part in the Adamson Bequest you can maybe win yourself an extra few hundred quid.
RUNNING! You can be a dosser. The Uni cross country club has training everyday (sometimes more than once) and is a brilliant social thing too. If yellow suits you.
LUOC -although LUOC is not thriving at the moment there are a few stalwarts like Chi who can help get the club up and running with a couple of keen freshers (just so you can claim all that funding i mentioned) LUOC has a great history at one time being the Uni's biggest sports club and you would join alumini such as Helen Winskill (nee Hargreaves) Yvette Baker (Hague, masters from Leeds and was a big part of the running scene there for a while) Roger Goddard, Jez Edwards, Alun Powell, Nick Cooper, Ian Nixon (when he graduates), Rachel Majumdar, Niall Bourke etc
It really is a top University, the biggest-after newly combined Manc Unis- and best, based on a single city centre campus and a great city to be in for your Undergraduate years and has great thriving running scene including fell, XC and of course orienteering. Real easy to get to Lakes for training from there too.
Anyway I expect you'll all end up picking the much travelled route of EUOC/ShUOC not denying their O-scenes are great but don't overlook Leeds.
And if anyone does end up going to Leeds get in touch and I can give some top tips - like where Gotts Park is to do Hill Reps - still haven't found a hill as good as that for doing hills.
LEEDS UNI is great!!!

Probably forgot loads of other people but anyway yep noone will listen probably but I'm just saying if you end up at Leeds you'll have all the fun.
Ignore Eddie - he has probably never been to Leeds. It's lovely and has everything you could possibly wish for. You can have Sunday lunch at HIFI after you've been orienteering and listen to jazz. OOOoo and go to Nazams the best curry house in the entire world AND the Hyde Park social club - the largest collection of sofas and pool tables i have ever seen and unbelievably cheap drinks. I miss those sofas.

Following on from Melons, OXford is a pretty fab place too. If you pick your college well they'll pay most of your sporting costs and there's some big sports scholarships around. OUOC has some top alumni, Pippa Whitehouse and Nick Barrable being the most recently impressive, and Cerys Manning is here at the mo. The Cross country club are one of the strongest in the country, especially the women, and OUOC organises training on top of all that. We have organised travel to an event or training day EVERY WEEKEND, which is something that so few university clubs actually do. It definitely doesn't bear dismissing and although OUOC is a small club, it is dedicated and full of opportunities.
Will? We've got proper fire now!

Porkyfatboy you may have been to Leeds but you obviously haven't embraced all it's possibilities. It's like a gritty northern jewel. Once you get in there and see through some of that grit it is like a sparkly and dazzling gem which will enhance your life. Anyway grit is good, it makes you a better person just like pumice stone or a good exfoliater.
ok no more diet coke..
Hyde Park at night... ah -sometimes i would challenge myself to walk through it alone just to see how long I could last before I started runnin'. But Woodhouse ridge is worse, i'd run back from training along there so fast because a million murderers lurked in the shadows. Great extra training boost. No more scary than the meadows in Nottingham tho. And now I live in Glasgow. hmmm.

prolly Whitelocks or it could have been the Angel Inn or the Boat- all three are tucked away down secret sidestreets near Harvey Nichs. Did it have lots of crazy old mirrors inside? Ah but there sooooo many good places to go out in Leeds.
ooh forgot Carrick Armer he went to Leeds and always insisted on finding somewhere that did kareoke when we were on LUOC socials. he was good but it was a bit interuptery to a round of pubgolf or whatever

i went to a nice pub on a sidestreet, well tucked away. (sidestreet also very narrow).
can't remember the name though. also- they have cool city centre guide/security/info (someone tell me the real name- melons?) people wandering round in bright coats. told me the way to virgin records i remember.
leeds is cool. i nearly went there but interestingly they wanted me to be a lot cleverer than sheffield did. i didn't want to have to study too hard at a-levels.

Pictures are better than words because sometimes words are big and hard to understand.
