Yes Melons, Leeds is the scariest place I've ever lived. The kidnaps at knifepoint, the muggings, the murders oh and and the hit and runs! Aire did a haloe'en night o in a wood where a girl was murdered a few years back. But I suppose an advantage is that you do learn how to run fast.
But seriously, having lived there, and knowing the old xc lot, I would highly reccommend it.
LEEDS UNI is great!!!

i know it well. i guess the women's will be 2 laps of the leeds relays course. if it is then you can really really attack it because it is predominantly downhill - this sounds crazy because obviously being a relay it starts and finishes in the same place but there is a viscous steep but short hill at the end and the majority is flat and slightly downhill. the bottom field is always really wet and muddy. if the weather's been bad so can the rest of the course but if you are cunning you can find firmer ground on the edge of the bank going along the top field. the course twists and turns quite a bit. generally i like it.
it clashes with a squad weekend so i'll probably not go which is a damn shame.

Derek Allison, awk -probably founded the club??
No, it was founded by Pete Haines (ex GB international, now M50 England team and father of Hector, Chloe, Florence and Lucy). Derek and I were part of the next 'generation', along with various others, most of us probably only featuring, if we do at all, on the fringes of Nopesporters' spheres of interest as parents of current juniors.
As a Londoner who came to Leeds Uni, married a local, and stayed firmly put, I obvioiusly think it's a great place. We live less than 20 minutes from the city centre, but have the Yorkshire Dales on our doorstep, and 5-6 orienteering areas visible from our house. Just a pity don't take advantage of them more at the moment!

Yeah, Becks.... but don't you have to be clever to go there......
I thought we'd established in an earlier thread somewhere that in general orienteers are pretty smart people

Southampton University is GREAT!!!
Campus just on the edge of southampton common (mapped), close to Southampton municipal sports centre with ski slop and brand new track and paddling pools. At the top of that is Lordswood (mapped) and just 15 mins on the train to the new forest (lots of mapped). Millions of running clubs, including Team Southampton (formerly team solent) British 4x400m record holders (Black, Akabusi, Bennet and some other dude). Southampton OC are reasonably active, BAOC have events every wednesday. plus its always warm, never rains, has an amazing city centre with loads of great shops on fun things for all the family. plus a stunning premiership stadium, and a 3rd devision football team.
Choose your futurs, choose Southampton...

I'm REALLY looking forward to moving to the big cities now...
I want to walk up the side of the mountain, I want to walk down the other side of the mountain. I want to swim in the river, lie in the sun. I want to try being nice to everyone.

bristol's a lovely place too. got 2 wicked universities both with mapped accomodation and lots of x country teams to train with and very friendly club members for lifts to events. we've got 2 football teams (twice as cool as southampton). i've lived there all my life and never got stabbed, raped or mugged (safer than leeds). but seriously its a brilliant base for running (lots of hills and parks) and orienteering (loads of mapped areas and local training). i'm very surprised its not as popular as sheffield with orienteers...
