Well thats just rubbish. i am going to start a small rant.
firstly, i have particular experience in seeing how the juniors are selected for various things, in the WM squad. in no way is it `clique' or dependant whether the managers/coaches like you. it is entirely fair.
next, its ridiculous that a few guests are posting such strong comments. its also difficult to reply to them as you can't differentiate one guest from another. guest writes "GUEST you are entitled to your opinion.." !!!!!! what- are you talking to yourself??
guest no.? who posted 9.18am today> when was it selected on club?
the coaches have a tough job deciding on athletes if numbers are restricted, it goes on results. in terms of getting into squad in first place, you have to have light green standard like carol said, simple. if you have it and want to go along, take initiative- be confident and ask to join/come along to training. i have seen numerous brand new juniors come along once they are `qualified'. Then it comes down to what you put in yourself. if you join in, behave responsibly, enjoy it, socialise, don't waste peoples time and try to improve, then you will be a most welcome, popular and vital part of the squad. everyone has fair chance, and it is a great squad.

Well guest, maybe thats the case, but every west midlander who is under 18 and has a light green standard is in the west midland squad, ok!Anonymous wrote:I have to disagree with what is being said about the WM squad. I dont want to meantion any names but recently it has become very selective and if your not 'in' with the coaches you might as not bother. It doesnt seem as if everyone has a fair chance.

the west midlands squad is now determined by whether your in the 'in crowd' with the coaches or not
Can you honestly say that you are consistently better than those in the squad? If you are then others will notice you. If not, then get out there, train, read the SQUAD training book (see thread in Coaching), train properly and get out there and win!
Stop winging and prove them wrong!
If you dedicate yourself 100% (as much as you can - nothing else matters) and still don't achieve selection then, as I see it, you have two choices. If you are convinced that you can still make it, change your training regime to improve further, or you can accept the fact that there will always be someone better than you and just enjoy competing at the level that you can achieve.
The only thing is to be true to yourself and your abilities - only when you have tried everything possible to achieve your best performance can you really say that you have reached your limit - until then....it's up to you.
(Either that or move to EA - if you have two legs and are breathing, I think you're in )

I am absolutely far too busy to be doing this - but i can't let it pass - like James and Rob say - it's rubbish to claim you are not in the squad if you're not in with the coaches - give us examples?
Only this month the squad manager asked me if i would contact a number of juniors in HOC - whom she did not know - and ask them if they would mind me passing their contact details on to her so she could invite them to the next training session in Jan. they all said yes - so hopefully they will go along - the squad manager had noticed their names in the results - she didn't know who they were - so how can they be "in" with her. You can't make claims like you have without backing them up.

Hey, East Anglia's better than that, we too have a selecton policy, and to be in the main squad I believe it's also Light Green standard. However, we are quite short of juniors and to that end we also try and provide some coaching for younger/less competent juniors to get them up to the standard where they will benefit from the coaching in the main squad.

guest, you really do sound as though you've had a sad experience, and it's may not be something you'd want to discuss more in this setting, But readers not familiar with squad system can know that WMJS is open to you if you have a light green standard. The training sessions in 2004 were held on areas provided by HOC, OD, WCH and WRE, (ie none on POTOC or COBOC areas) and I think peak attendance was about 23 juniors. Most WMJS members seemed to manage to get to 3 or 4 of them.
There was a tour to Sweden , and juniors from HOC WCH, OD and COBOC went to Lakeside, which means no juniors from POTOC or WRE went (but I don't know if any wanted to) Funds come from WMOA, families and fundraising
Some WM juniors with light green or even green standards don't belong to WMJS by choice, usually because of other activities. The ones I personally know in that position are aware that it makes them unlikely to be selected for regional teams, but don't mind.
I know that at least two nopesport posters who have/were prepared to get coaching qualifications, and were resident in the WM, were personally invited this year to come and help with WMJS coaching, but were unable to do so for personal reasons. I somehow doubt that a coach from any WM club who wanted to help with coaching would be turned down! Have you got a coach in your club Guest? Regional squad co-ordinating and coaching is all done by volunteers in their own time ( a lot of time); it's not pre-ordained by some power which club they come from!
Guest, you have a lot of power to alter things that make you sad/angry. You and your club can talk anything you find unfair through with your squad co-ordinator .Your club also sends a rep to the WMOA committee, which supports the WMJS with funds. No club has raised issues of WMJS "inequity" at that forum, but would get a hearing if they did, If you feel that the squad's not working for you or your club, make it work! If you're over 16 then get some coaching qualifications youself and get involved! It can only be as good as the juniors help the organisers to make it be.

I was only joshing I had similar calls to Mrs H about passing on contact details of juniors (M/W12s) who had been identifed as having potential through consistently good results on orange courses.

my ambiguous sentence structure to blame. I know he went to Sweden, but he didn't go to Lakeside (unless I'm having an acute amnesic attack here)

exactly the kind of thing i see. didn't want to mention before as it would have maybe seemed biased and not as believable, but here is exactly how people get in usually. what others have said about selection for events is right. you've got to select yourself by being good enough.

Having just been alerted to this thread I would add my encouragement to you ("Guest") to find some way of getting a message to someone about your issues. If you know me then please make it directly to me. We in WMJS have never knowingly excluded anyone; the only selections we make are for JIRC where we publish the criteria and race results we will look at and sometimes for Lakeside if we have more juniors in the age range than we can take. This year I sent out an email asking for those interested/available for Lakeside to let me know. We had 11 replies and in the end took 8 because of late injuries so everyone who expressed an interest went.
My telephone number and email address are in the West Midlander.
